Obama and daughters purchase prose and ice pops on Small Business Saturday Posted: 28 Nov 2015 12:35 PM PST President Barack Obama took his teenage daughters Malia and Sasha shopping on Saturday for books and a sweet treat to promote Small Business Saturday, an annual event designed to boost holiday shopping at mom-and-pop shops. In the tiny Upshur Street Books in northwest Washington, the casually dressed Obama and his daughters browsed for books with the help of the store manager, Anna Thorn. The Obamas bought nine books that spanned age brackets, including three young-adult novels by Cynthia Voigt, "Purity: A Novel" by Jonathan Franzen, "Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights: A Novel" by Salman Rushdie, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, Book 8" by Jeff Kinney, and "Dork Diaries 1: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life" by Rachel Renée Russell. |
Rain and ice batter central U.S. as Texas death toll rises to four Posted: 28 Nov 2015 12:19 PM PST Flooding and travel delays are likely over the holiday weekend for a swath of south and central United States stretching from Texas to Kentucky, bringing up to a foot of rain in some places and killing at least four, weather forecasters said Saturday. The system is expected to lead to airport delays across the central and north part of the United States, according to Accuweather.com. A double hit of moisture from Tropical Storm Sandra and the Gulf of Mexico combine brought record-breaking rains and flooding to the Dallas-Fort Worth region over the Thanksgiving holiday. |

(Reuters) - A gunman stormed a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Colorado Springs on Friday and opened fire with a rifle in an attack that left three people dead and nine others injured, authorities said. The dead included one police officer and two civilians, Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey told reporters about an hour after the suspect had been captured. All nine surviving victims - five police officers and four civilians - were listed in good condition at area hospitals, Carney said. |

The first identification of a suspect in the shooting between at least two groups of people came four days after New Orleans police said the shooting appeared to be gang-related. The suspect sought by police has been identified as Joseph "Moe" Allen, 32, New Orleans police said in a statement. |

Police arrest gunman who opened fire in Colorado abortion clinic Posted: 27 Nov 2015 04:22 PM PST Police arrested a gunman who stormed a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Colorado Springs on Friday and opened fire with a rifle in a burst of violence that left at least 11 people injured, including five officers, authorities said. Five hours after the siege began, the suspect was taken into custody, the city of Colorado Springs confirmed in a message posted on the municipal Twitter account. Five police officers were among those injured in the gunfire, said police spokeswoman Lieutenant Catherine Buckley. |
