Prison bus collides with truck in Arizona, seriously injuring three

Another 19 people on the bus were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment after the violent crash that scattered debris across the highway about 100 miles south of Phoenix, said Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Lamoreaux. The seriously injured inmates and driver were transported to hospitals, as well, said Bart Graves, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. The driver of semi-truck told state troopers he toppled his vehicle trying to avoid an animal that had darted onto the roadway, Graves said.

More than 30 people arrested in Arkansas drug, gun case

More than 30 people in northeast Arkansas have been arrested on firearms and drug charges in a major federal investigation, a U.S. Attorney's office said on Tuesday. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas scheduled a news conference later in the day to discuss the unsealing of 40 federal indictments charging 70 defendants with drug and gun crimes in the case, it said in a statement.

A three-judge panel of the court in July had upheld McDonnell's conviction for taking $177,000 in gifts and loans from businessman Jonnie Williams in exchange for promoting one of his company's dietary supplements.

The discharge has continued to flow at the rate of 500 gallons (1,900 liters) per minute from the site of the century-old Gold King Mine, near the town of Silverton in southwestern Colorado, into a stream below called Cement Creek.

A range of ideas for shrinking the swelling U.S. prison population, now at 2.2 million, was advanced by the Urban Institute, a policy think tank, in the wake of Obama's historic prison visit last month and call for congressional sentencing reform legislation. The Urban Institute unveiled an online tool, called the Prison Population Forecaster, to measure how the changes would affect the prison population, which grew exponentially over the past four decades even as crime dropped to all-time recorded lows.

California man pleads guilty to bid to support Islamic State

A 21-year-old Southern California man who prosecutors say sought to travel to Syria last year in a bid to join Islamic State fighters pleaded guilty on Monday to federal charges. Adam Dandach, who was arrested in Turkey in July, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California, to providing material support to Islamic State and making a false statement on a passport. As part of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, Dandach admitted that he tried to travel to Syria to join the militant group.
