Report: Lawmaker hoped to distract from affair with smear Posted: 07 Aug 2015 11:51 AM PDT A Michigan lawmaker had an email sent to his Republican supporters falsely claiming he had been caught having sex with a male prostitute, apparently believing such a smear campaign would help distract attention from an alleged extramarital affair between him and another lawmaker, a newspaper reported Friday. |

Facing epidemic, Cincinnati hospitals test mothers, newborns for drugs Posted: 07 Aug 2015 09:50 AM PDT By Mary Wisniewski CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Bubbly and athletic, Heather Padgett, raised in a loving family in the Cincinnati suburbs, would not fit the stereotype of a heroin addict. Until she got clean last August, she was part of what the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called a heroin epidemic - a 100 percent rise in heroin addiction among Americans between 2002 and 2013. The sharp rise in heroin addiction, coupled with the risks of newborns developing withdrawal symptoms after they are sent home, has led a group of Cincinnati hospitals to try what they say is the first program of its kind in the United States: testing all mothers, or their infants, for opiates regardless of background, not just those who seem high-risk. |
Police in Buffalo suburb confirm NHL's Kane being investigated Posted: 07 Aug 2015 08:58 AM PDT (Reuters) - Police in a Buffalo, New York, suburb said on Friday they were investigating an incident that occurred at the home of Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane but would not confirm reports he was the subject of rape allegations. Citing two law enforcement sources, the Buffalo News reported on Thursday that the four-time National Hockey League All-Star was being investigated for rape. "The town of Hamburg police department is investigating an incident that allegedly occurred at the residence of NHL player Patrick Kane last weekend," Police Chief Gregory Wickett told reporters. |
Chicago police, ACLU reach deal on police 'stop and frisk' policy Posted: 07 Aug 2015 08:26 AM PDT The Chicago Police Department agreed on Friday to outside monitoring of "stop-and-frisk" searches by its officers following a report that found they checked a disproportionate number of blacks and made more stops than their peers in other cities. The second-largest U.S. police department will begin keeping more data about the stops, including the race, ethnicity and gender of those stopped, the reasons for stops and their outcomes. The data will be shared with the American Civil Liberties Union and with a former U.S. magistrate judge, who will issue public reports twice a year on the department's use of the stop-and-frisk tactic and assess whether the police force is complying with U.S. law. |

Virginia police kill black man, officer wounded Posted: 06 Aug 2015 03:11 PM PDT The shooting death occurred late on Wednesday when the victim, identified as Keshawn Hargrove, 20, of Richmond, fired on officers and refused to drop his gun, police spokesman Gene Lepley. The incident was the latest in a series of fatal police confrontations across the United States that have raised questions about police use of force against minorities. The two officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Ryan Bailey, who is black, and Jacob DeBoard, who is white, Lepley said. |
