Fear, mistrust linger in Ferguson despite reform efforts by police Posted: 08 Aug 2015 11:50 AM PDT The scene outside the Ferguson Police Department in Missouri on Friday night was familiar: A crowd of 300 protesters, angry over last year's fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teen, went toe-to-toe with a line of officers, screaming profanities. "They were in our face, but we didn't react," said Ferguson police Sergeant Dominica Fuller, clad for Friday night's police work in a polo shirt bearing the phrase "community engagement team" rather than the body armor and riot helmets common in the unrest following the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown on Aug. 9, 2014. "Our job now is to listen," said Fuller, one of five black officers on the 50-member police force who in May became the city's first black female police sergeant. |

Trump dumped from conservative event in Atlanta over 'inappropriate' comments Posted: 07 Aug 2015 10:11 PM PDT By Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was dumped from a prime speaking role to an important gathering of conservative activists on Friday for his criticism of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly after a combustible debate performance. Trump was scheduled to deliver the keynote address on Saturday night at a conference in Atlanta organized by Red State, an influential conservative group. Red State chief Erick Erickson said he had disinvited Trump from the event because of what he described as "demeaning" remarks about Kelly who was one of three moderators during the first major Republican debate on Thursday night in Cleveland. |

Transgender California inmate who won reassignment surgery to be paroled Posted: 07 Aug 2015 07:59 PM PDT A transgender California prison inmate will be paroled soon, rendering moot a controversial court order requiring the state to pay for gender reassignment surgery, state prison officials said late Friday. Michelle Lael-Norsworthy, for whom the state was ordered earlier this year to provide the surgery, will be released within about a week, a spokesman for the state said. Separately on Friday the state reached a settlement with another transgender woman inmate, Shiloh Quine, agreeing to provider her surgery and transfer her to a women's prison. |
Colorado gunman gets life sentence for killing 12 in movie rampage Posted: 07 Aug 2015 07:42 PM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - A Colorado jury sentenced movie rampage gunman James Holmes to life without parole on Friday, rejecting the death penalty for the 27-year-old who entered a midnight screening of a Batman film wielding a semi-automatic rifle, shotgun and pistol and killed a dozen people. After less than a day of deliberations, and in a surprise to many legal experts and those in the packed courtroom, the jurors said they were unable to reach a unanimous decision condemning Holmes to execution. Holmes showed no reaction. |
Evacuees from California blaze go home as lightning threatens new fires Posted: 07 Aug 2015 06:18 PM PDT Hundreds of people forced to flee California's fiercest wildfire were allowed to return home on Friday, with firefighters gaining greater control over the blaze even as lightning strikes threatened to spark other fires in the drought-parched state. A U.S. House of Representatives committee made public a letter requesting interviews with personnel from the organization who appeared in surreptitiously recorded videos in discussions about providing fetal tissue for research. House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans also said they had written to three companies identified as human fetal tissue suppliers to request information and briefings. |
