The legal move filed in circuit court in Tallahassee comes after Florida's Republican Governor Rick Scott ordered a probe last month of the state's 16 Planned Parenthood locations which resulted in three clinics being cited Aug. 5 for illegally performing abortions in the second trimester. Planned Parenthood said the abortions in questions were first trimester abortions and that the state had arbitrarily changed the way it measures the first trimester, shortening it to 12 weeks from 14.

The White House announced a new strategy on Monday to tackle the explosion in heroin use in a collection of eastern states, focusing on treating addicts rather than punishing them and targeting high-level suppliers for arrest. The move is a response to a sharp rise in the use of heroin and opiate-based painkillers, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has described as an epidemic. An estimated 45 percent of U.S. heroin users are also addicted to prescription painkillers.

E'Dena Hines, 33, was found fatally stabbed early on Sunday in a street near her apartment in the city's Washington Heights neighborhood, according to the New York Police Department. Lamar Davenport, 30, was taken into custody and transferred to a hospital for mental evaluation, police said.

Three people killed in a two-plane collision near San Diego

(Reuters) - At least three people were killed after two small planes collided in mid-air on Sunday morning miles (km) from a San Diego airport, the Los Angeles Times newspaper reported. The crash occurred at around 11 a.m. when a twin-engine Sabreliner collided with a single-engine Cessna 172 over an area located two miles (3 km) northeast of Brown Field in San Diego, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Authority said. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what led to the crash, the FAA spokesman said. ...
