Colorado movie gunman to receive 12 life sentences and more Posted: 26 Aug 2015 08:23 AM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - The judge in the Colorado movie massacre trial will condemn the gunman to 12 life sentences and potentially thousands more years in prison on Wednesday, and is expected to address James Holmes directly as the proceedings conclude. Holmes was found guilty in July of murdering 12 people and wounding 70 when he opened fire inside a packed midnight screening of a Batman film at a multiplex in the Denver suburb of Aurora. After two days of often tearful and sometimes angry testimony from victims of Holmes' July 2012 rampage, the lead prosecutor said on Tuesday the shooter should get every day of the longest possible sentence. |

Dedicated New York State police unit to tackle campus sex assault Posted: 26 Aug 2015 05:03 AM PDT New York state is launching a specialized police unit to help crack down on sexual assault on college campuses, but some victims' advocates are wary, saying law enforcement has not been effective in tackling the issue in the past. A law signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo last month allocates $4.5 million for what officials have said is a first-in-the-nation police unit that will train college officials and local police units to respond better to sexual assaults on campus. The U.S. Department of Education is currently investigating 131 schools for violating federal law in their handling of sexual assault allegations, and New York leads the country with 20 schools on that list. |
Defense to begin case in New Hampshire prep school rape trial Posted: 26 Aug 2015 04:16 AM PDT Lawyers for a former student at an elite New Hampshire prep school on Wednesday are due to begin making the defense case for the 19-year-old accused of raping a 15-year-old girl days before graduation last year. Owen Labrie has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually assaulting the younger student at St. Paul's School in Concord in an attack that has cast a harsh light on the boarding school's culture. |
Dust-covered woman from iconic 9/11 photograph dies of cancer Posted: 26 Aug 2015 03:25 AM PDT A survivor of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York who was featured in one of the most haunting photographs of the outrage has died of stomach cancer. The family of Marcy Borders first announced her death Monday on Facebook. Borders, who was 28 at the time of the attacks, was just one month into a job for Bank of America in one of the Twin Towers. |

Deported man captured in tourist photo before slaying of San Francisco woman: police Posted: 25 Aug 2015 11:09 PM PDT A convicted felon who had been deported to Mexico five times was seen acting erratically and captured in a tourist photo just moments before police say he shot dead a 32-year-old woman on a San Francisco pier last month, investigators said on Tuesday. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez has pleaded not guilty to the seemingly random shooting of Kathryn Steinle on July 1 as she walked with her father and a friend along the city's waterfront. A San Francisco Superior Court judge is weighing whether prosecutors have enough evidence to proceed to trial with murder charges. |

Trump mixes it up in Iowa: Rally highlights Posted: 25 Aug 2015 07:35 PM PDT GOP frontrunner held a rally in Dubuque, Iowa on Tuesday night just moments after mixing it up with a member of the press. Trump was confronted at a press conference preceding his town hall with Iowa voters by Univision's Jorge Ramos, who at one point was escorted from the building by security. It proved just the start of a spirited night in the Hawkeye State as Trump showed once again that any signs of his campaign receding are hard to find. Yahoo News provided live coverage of all the night's events. |

Planned Parenthood sues to stop funding cuts in Louisiana Posted: 25 Aug 2015 02:05 PM PDT Louisiana was the first of three Southern states to announce plans to end its contract with the reproductive health organization to provide medical services to low-income residents. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, cited the release of videos this summer by a national anti-abortion group, the Center for Medical Progress. The center says the videos show Planned Parenthood sells tissue of aborted fetuses but the organization denies wrongdoing and says it does not profit from fetal tissue donation, noting it is allowed to charge costs to cover its expenses. |
