Colorado movie gunman to receive 12 life sentences and more

(Reuters) - The judge in the Colorado movie massacre trial will condemn the gunman to 12 life sentences and potentially thousands more years in prison on Wednesday, and is expected to address James Holmes directly as the proceedings conclude. Holmes was found guilty in July of murdering 12 people and wounding 70 when he opened fire inside a packed midnight screening of a Batman film at a multiplex in the Denver suburb of Aurora. After two days of often tearful and sometimes angry testimony from victims of Holmes' July 2012 rampage, the lead prosecutor said on Tuesday the shooter should get every day of the longest possible sentence.

Two Virginia television journalists fatally shot in on-air attack

(Reuters) - Two television journalists were shot and killed in Virginia on Wednesday morning while conducting a live television interview, their station, WDBJ7 said. The incident occurred during a live broadcast in Bedford County, when shots could be heard, sending the reporter and her source screaming and ducking for cover. A law signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo last month allocates $4.5 million for what officials have said is a first-in-the-nation police unit that will train college officials and local police units to respond better to sexual assaults on campus. The U.S. Department of Education is currently investigating 131 schools for violating federal law in their handling of sexual assault allegations, and New York leads the country with 20 schools on that list.
