Quiet victims at peace with Colorado gunman's life sentence Posted: 09 Aug 2015 08:21 AM PDT When the Colorado gunman's defense lawyer rose to make her closing argument and the other families of the murder victims of James Holmes walked out of the courtroom, Scott and Kathleen Larimer stayed in their seats. While other victims' relatives had no wish to hear a plea for the shooter to be spared the death penalty, Scott Larimer said the retired couple never considered leaving. Holmes was sentenced on Friday to a mandatory life sentence in prison after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision in favor of execution. |
Trump refuses to apologize for 'blood' remark Posted: 09 Aug 2015 07:33 AM PDT Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump on Sunday refused to apologize for a crude attack on a female Fox News journalist that sparked widespread outrage, insisting he was misunderstood. The brash billionaire -- who is leading a packed Republican field of White House hopefuls -- found himself at the center of controversy after seeming to suggest that Megyn Kelly, one of the moderators of last week's presidential debate, was tough on him because she was menstruating. "You can see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever," Trump told CNN on Friday. |

Protesters take to Ferguson streets to mark anniversary of Brown killing Posted: 08 Aug 2015 11:07 PM PDT The protest in front of police headquarters took on elements of a street carnival ahead of the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white officer in the city. "The whole idea is for people to be able to vent, to express themselves," said Ferguson police Sergeant Dominica Fuller, one of five African-Americans on the 50-member police force. Civil rights activists, religious leaders and others from around the United States have converged on Ferguson, a mostly black community of about 21,000 people, to commemorate the life and death of 18-year-old Brown, who was unarmed when he was shot in a confrontation with a white police officer on Aug. 9, 2014. |
FBI aid sought in Texas probe of unarmed black teen shot dead by police Posted: 08 Aug 2015 08:46 PM PDT The FBI has been asked to help investigate a white police officer's fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager suspected of driving a vehicle through the window of a car dealership in Arlington, Texas, the city's police chief said on Saturday. The shooting death early on Friday of 19-year-old college football player Christian Taylor came two days before the one-year anniversary of the death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in an encounter with a white officer in Ferguson, Missouri, that ignited protests in many U.S. cities. Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson said at a news conference his department asked Tom Class, special agent in charge at the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Dallas office, to participate in the probe of Taylor's death and review investigative work and findings. |
