Former president Carter to receive treatment for brain cancer Posted: 20 Aug 2015 07:52 AM PDT By David Beasley ATLANTA (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said on Thursday he will start radiation treatment for cancer on his brain later in the day. Carter, 90, said he will cut back dramatically on his schedule to receive treatment every three weeks after doctors detected four spots of melanoma on his brain following liver cancer surgery. Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, his one-term in the White House defined by national economic struggles and the embarrassing Iran hostage crisis. |

Victim in New Hampshire prep school rape trial due back on stand Posted: 20 Aug 2015 04:17 AM PDT A teenager who says she was raped by a graduating senior at their elite New Hampshire prep school last year is due back on the witness stand on Thursday to face questioning by a defense attorney. The teen testified on Wednesday that fellow student Owen Labrie, now 19, raped her after luring her to a remote building in the wooded campus of St. Paul's School, whose graduates include prominent U.S. business and political figures, including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The trial has cast a light on what Labrie has described as the school tradition of a "senior salute," in which younger students agree to sex with graduating seniors. |

Exclusive: U.S. government, police working on counter-drone system - sources Posted: 19 Aug 2015 10:21 PM PDT As concerns rise about a security menace posed by rogue drone flights, U.S. government agencies are working with state and local police forces to develop high-tech systems to protect vulnerable sites, according to sources familiar with the matter. Although the research aimed at tracking and disabling drones is at an early stage, there has been at least one field test. Last New Year's Eve, New York police used a microwave-based system to try to track a commercially available drone at a packed Times Square and send it back to its operator, according to one source involved in the test. |

California prosecutors say Uber's background checks missed convicts Posted: 19 Aug 2015 07:09 PM PDT By Curtis Skinner SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California prosecutors have broadened their civil lawsuit against popular online ride-sharing service Uber, alleging that its background checks missed people previously convicted of murder and sex crimes, court records show. The district attorneys of San Francisco and Los Angeles filed an amended complaint against Uber Technologies Inc on Tuesday, which said "systemic failures in Uber's background check process" came to light after their initial December filing. The new complaint said registered sex offenders, identity thieves, burglars, a kidnapper and a convicted murderer had passed the firm's screening process and were driving for the company until they were cited for providing illegal rides. |

More racial unrest in St. Louis after police kill black suspect Posted: 19 Aug 2015 06:16 PM PDT St. Louis police fatally shot a black teenager they say pointed a gun at them on Wednesday, drawing angry protesters and recalling the racial tensions sparked by the killing of an unarmed African-American teen in nearby Ferguson, Missouri, a year ago. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the shooting took place as officers were carrying out a search warrant and two young black men ran out the back door of the targeted house. One suspect pointed a gun at officers who then fired about four times, killing him, Dotson said. |
Former Los Angeles sheriff's captain pleads guilty to lying at trial Posted: 19 Aug 2015 05:27 PM PDT A former Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's captain charged in a probe of jail abuse pleaded guilty on Wednesday to lying on the witness stand, officials said. Under his plea agreement, William Thomas Carey, 57, must cooperate with U.S. prosecutors in the case against a retired second-in-command at the department. Carey entered his guilty plea in federal court in Los Angeles and faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 25, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. |
