Police probing reports of shooting at D.C.'s Union Station Posted: 11 Sep 2015 11:02 AM PDT Police in Washington, D.C., on Friday were investigating reports of a shooting inside Union Station, after local media outlets said shots had been fired at the train station's food court, but added that the transportation hub was not an "active shooter situation." A security guard shot a person at the station, the Washington Post said in a tweet. The station is close to the U.S. Congress, and both the Senate's Sergeant at Arms and the Capitol Police warned people to stay away from the popular tourist destination.

BA jet engine failure uncontained, pieces hit runway: investigators Posted: 11 Sep 2015 03:32 AM PDT The engine caught fire as flight BA2276 was about to take off for London. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said a failure in the plane's GE90 engine was not contained by the engine's casing and that it had found several pieces of the high pressure compressor spool on the runway. The NTSB's findings therefore suggest that the failure was within the internal part of the engine.

Evacuations ordered as northern California wildfire expands in extreme heat Posted: 10 Sep 2015 11:03 PM PDT (Reuters) - A wildfire burning in parched northern California brushland expanded rapidly on Thursday as the area sweltered under triple digit temperatures, forcing the evacuation of several communities, state fire officials said. The so-called Butte Fire, which erupted on Wednesday east of the city of Jackson, about an hour's drive southeast of the state capital, Sacramento, grew to 14,700 acres (5,949 hectares)by Thursday evening, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). Eight structures and outbuildings have been destroyed and another 1,500 structures were threatened, Cal Fire said.

The male worker was taken by ambulance to a local burn unit with life-threatening injuries from the explosion at Taser International, Inc. in Scottsdale, said fire spokesman Battalion Chief Chris Schibi. |
Hostages held in LA-area restaurant as police pursue carjacking suspect Posted: 10 Sep 2015 09:05 PM PDT Several people were being held hostage in a Los Angeles-area restaurant late on Thursday after a suspected carjacker barricaded himself inside the building following a police chase, law enforcement and media reported. The suspect had holed up inside a barbecue restaurant in the city of Downey, in southeast Los Angeles, police said. Broadcasters KNBC and KCAl9 said six people were taken hostage.
Los Angeles street vendors call on mayor for legalization process Posted: 10 Sep 2015 08:31 PM PDT Los Angeles street vendors who sell food, trinkets, toys and other small items in parks and along sidewalks rallied outside City Hall on Thursday to demand a process for making their work legal. About 40 vendors called for direct meetings with Mayor Eric Garcetti about legalizing street vending - a major source of income for some 50,000 people, many of them unauthorized immigrants in a city that has increasingly sought to show support for migrants. The protesters also expressed frustration with Garcetti for signing an ordinance that bans unlicensed vending in city parks.

Oregon judge who refused gay marriages says freedom of religion violated Posted: 10 Sep 2015 03:08 PM PDT Marion County Circuit Court Judge Vance Day has launched a legal defense and filed a response to the complaints under review by a state judicial commission, denying 13 counts of violating judicial code. Day said the ethics review violates his "freedom of speech, association and free exercise of religion guaranteed under the U.S. and Oregon constitutions," according to a written statement by his spokesman, Patrick Korten. A U.S. Supreme Court decision in June legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states, but some elected clerks and lower-court judges have opposed the ruling citing religious beliefs, including a Kentucky county clerk who was released from jail on Tuesday after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
