Police to review handling of Texas student handcuffed over clock Posted: 18 Sep 2015 08:43 AM PDT "One thing is clear to me, regardless of what we did, no matter what decision was made, there would've been people who agreed with it and people who disagreed with it," police Chief Larry Boyd told CNN. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said Ahmed Mohamed, 14, is Muslim and the case was an example of the climate of hate and manufactured fear around the religion. The bespectacled ninth grader in a NASA T-shirt was led away in handcuffs from MacArthur High School on Monday after school officials discovered the clock. |
U.S. tourism to Cuba still prohibited despite new rules Posted: 18 Sep 2015 08:08 AM PDT Even as the U.S. moved on Friday to ease travel and other restrictions to Cuba, Americans will still not be allowed to go to the Communist nation for "tourist activities," a U.S. official said. Speaking to reporters, senior Obama administration officials said such travel remains prohibited even as the regulations expand to allow family members to travel alongside authorized travelers for a wider variety of activities. Overall, the U.S. officials also said that the full impact of latest easing of all Cuba restrictions will depend on whether the Cuban government makes reforms, including on imports. |

Body of seventh hiker found in Zion National Park in Utah Posted: 17 Sep 2015 07:34 PM PDT The body of the seventh and final member of the canyoneering group missing in Zion was located on Thursday, capping three days searches by more than 60 park rangers, sheriff's deputies and emergency personnel from several agencies. Park officials said all were visitors from California and Nevada hiking together on a day trip through narrow Keyhole Canyon, a challenging route on the east side of Zion that requires canyoneers to swim through several pools of water and rappel steep slopes. The leader of the group had experience exploring that canyon and others, said Cindy Purcell, Zion's chief park ranger. |
Deal would let Southern California buy surplus water from Nevada Posted: 17 Sep 2015 06:10 PM PDT (Reuters) - A $45 million deal that would let Southern California's biggest water agency access a major supply of water that would normally go to southern Nevada won approval on Thursday from the Southern Nevada Water Authority. The board of the Metropolitan Water District, a wholesaler that supplies public utilities in heavily populated Southern California, will vote on the deal next week, a spokesman said. Under the arrangement, the Southern California agency would be able to use 150,000 acre-feet of surplus water this year if needed, while allowing Nevada to buy it back in future years, the Southern Nevada Water Authority said in a statement on its website. |

Designated zones proposed for New York Times Square street performers Posted: 17 Sep 2015 05:01 PM PDT New York City would require topless women in body paint, Elmo impersonators and other costumed characters who populate Times Square to work in designated zones under a new plan to manage a surge of street performers in the famed Manhattan crossroads. Mayor Bill de Blasio voiced qualified support for the proposal, which was released on Thursday by a business group and is a response to the increasing criticism of the performers from officials. De Blasio and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have called the performers aggressive solicitors who threaten to drag Times Square back to the "bad old days" when the area was a tawdry magnet for prostitutes, drug dealers and panhandlers. |
Senate report 'proves Lithuania hosted CIA jail': detainee's lawyers Posted: 17 Sep 2015 03:59 PM PDT A U.S. Senate report on CIA interrogations proves beyond doubt that Lithuania knowingly hosted one of the agency's secret detention facilities, lawyers for an ex-detainee told the European Court of Human Rights on Thursday. Saudi-born Abu Zubaydah is asking the Strasbourg-based court to rule that NATO member Lithuania was part of a network of U.S. allies which agreed to host CIA "black sites" around the world where al Qaeda suspects were held and tortured. |
