U.S. Air Force still evaluating options for F-35 'block buy' Posted: 14 Sep 2015 12:30 PM PDT The U.S. Air Force on Monday said it is still examining a possible "block buy" that the Pentagon hopes to put together to lower the cost of U.S. and foreign military purchases of Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35 fighter jet in coming years. Air Force acquisition chief William LaPlante said the U.S. military services and international partners are studying options for such a deal, which would pool planned purchases over a number of years to benefit from larger economies of scale and drive down the price of the new stealth fighter. If in fact there is merit to it, we have time to do it," he said at the annual Air Force Association conference. |

Kentucky clerk in gay marriage dispute returning to work Posted: 14 Sep 2015 04:23 AM PDT By Steve Bittenbender MOREHEAD, Ky. (Reuters) - The county clerk from Kentucky who was jailed after refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples is expected to return to work on Monday, with supporters and critics alike wondering whether she will soon be back before a judge. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and her attorneys have said the 49-year-old woman will not violate her conscience when she returns to work. Davis's lawyer, Mathew Staver of the Liberty Counsel religious freedom organization, hinted on Sunday at a possible resolution to a legal standoff between the clerk and the courts, saying Davis would be willing to process and file licenses if they did not bear her name. |

The so-called Valley Fire, now ranked as the most destructive among scores of blazes that have ravaged the drought-stricken Western United States this summer, came amid what California fire officials described as "unheard of fire behavior" this season. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) put the total number of Valley Fire evacuees on Sunday night at more than 19,300. |

One of the teachers' chief grievances is that they have received no cost-of-living raise in six years despite surging living expenses in Seattle, particularly for housing, fueled largely by growth in the city's technology sector. |
