Suspect charged in Arizona highway shootings, held on $1 million bond

The man who was arrested in connection with a spate of shootings along a major highway through Arizona was arraigned on Saturday on felony charges that include drive-by shooting and terrorism. Wearing a gray and white striped prison uniform, Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., 21, said he was not the person responsible for the shootings. Merritt, of Glendale, Arizona, was charged with four counts each of drive-by shooting, intentional acts of terrorism, and aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument, in addition to other charges.

Michael Nolan of Yonkers, New York, was shot once in the head and twice in the body while he was standing with a group of people in a Burger King parking lot, said Yonkers Police spokesman Lieutenant Patrick McCormack.

Two men and an elderly, disabled woman have been killed by the so-called Valley Fire, which has scorched 73,700 acres (29,825 hectares) just north of Napa County's wine-producing region, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Authorities were still searching on Friday for people who had been reported missing, said Lake County Undersheriff Chris Macedo, although he could not provide an exact tally.
