VW names Porsche chief Mueller as new CEO: supervisory board

Mueller, 62, will take over immediately, replacing Martin Winterkorn who stepped down two days earlier, said the head of the supervisory board, Berthold Huber, at the car maker's headquarters in Wolfsburg, northern Germany. "My most pressing task will be to restore confidence in the Volkswagen Group -- through an unsparing investigation and maximum transparency, but also by drawing the right lessons from the current situation," Mueller vowed.

"We are upping our game," Chris Grundler, head of transportation and air quality at the Environmental Protection Agency, told reporters in a teleconference. Volkswagen could face $18 billion in fines from the EPA after it admitted using software in diesel cars that evades emissions tests.

A Saudi prince has been arrested on charges of trying to force a worker at a Beverly Hills estate to perform oral sex, Los Angeles police said on Thursday. Majed Abdulaziz Al-Saud, 28, was arrested on Wednesday and was released on $300,000 bond the next day, according to police and online jail records.
