VW names Porsche chief Mueller as new CEO: supervisory board Posted: 25 Sep 2015 10:40 AM PDT German carmaker Volkswagen Friday named Matthias Mueller, head of its luxury sports car brand Porsche, as its new CEO tasked with steering it out of the wreckage of a pollution test rigging scandal. Mueller, 62, will take over immediately, replacing Martin Winterkorn who stepped down two days earlier, said the head of the supervisory board, Berthold Huber, at the car maker's headquarters in Wolfsburg, northern Germany. "My most pressing task will be to restore confidence in the Volkswagen Group -- through an unsparing investigation and maximum transparency, but also by drawing the right lessons from the current situation," Mueller vowed. |

EPA says to take tougher stance on auto emissions tests Posted: 25 Sep 2015 08:08 AM PDT U.S. environmental regulators said on Friday they are sending a letter to all automobile manufacturers saying they are stepping up emissions-testing activities in response to Volkswagen's alleged violations of pollution laws. "We are upping our game," Chris Grundler, head of transportation and air quality at the Environmental Protection Agency, told reporters in a teleconference. Volkswagen could face $18 billion in fines from the EPA after it admitted using software in diesel cars that evades emissions tests. |

Four killed, 12 critical after tour bus crash on Seattle bridge Posted: 24 Sep 2015 02:28 PM PDT At least four people were killed and 12 critically injured on Thursday when an amphibious tour bus collided with a charter bus on a Seattle bridge, authorities said. The fire department said 44 people were treated at area hospitals for injuries after the crash on the heavily trafficked Aurora Bridge, which crosses a canal linking Lake Union with the Puget Sound's Shilshole Bay. Local TV broadcast footage showed the front of the Ride the Ducks bus crumpled with debris on the ground from the impact with the tour bus. |
