Kentucky clerk asks court to force governor to OK denial of gay marriage licenses Posted: 07 Sep 2015 10:28 AM PDT LOUISVILLE, Ky (Reuters) - Lawyers for jailed Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis said on Monday they had asked an appellate court to force Governor Steve Beshear to allow her to refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses based on her religious convictions. They sought emergency relief from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, asking it to grant Davis an exemption from the "Governor's mandate that all county clerks issue marriage licenses," lawyers from the non-profit legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel, which represents Davis, said in a press release. ... |
'Glaring errors' led court to annul Knox murder conviction Posted: 07 Sep 2015 09:53 AM PDT Italy's top court threw out a conviction of American Amanda Knox for the 2007 murder of her British flatmate due to "glaring errors" in the case against her, a document showed on Monday. The brutal stabbing of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher prompted a zigzag of contradictory rulings which ended in March with the acquittal of Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, casting an uncomfortable spotlight on Italy's legal system. The Court of Cassation said there were no certain biological traces of Knox or Sollecito in the room where the murder was committed, nor on the victim's body. |

Obama to order government contractors to offer workers paid sick leave Posted: 07 Sep 2015 06:34 AM PDT President Barack Obama will sign an executive order on Monday in Boston requiring U.S. government contractors to offer seven days of paid sick leave a year to their workers, the White House said. Senior adviser Valerie Jarrett told reporters on a conference call on Sunday that the United States was the only developed country that did not have a paid leave policy and that the executive order would benefit about 300,000 people working on government contracts. "Everyday, the president sees the pressing need for policies to support working families," said Jarrett. |

Austria to revoke measures that let migrants cross from Hungary Posted: 06 Sep 2015 05:28 PM PDT By Michael Shields and Irene Preisinger VIENNA/MUNICH (Reuters) - Austria said on Sunday it planned to end emergency measures that have allowed thousands of refugees stranded in Hungary into Austria and Germany since Saturday morning. Austria had suspended its random border checks after photographs of a Syrian toddler lying dead on a Turkish beach showed Europeans the horror faced by those desperate enough to travel illegally into the heart of Europe, which is deeply divided over how to cope. After 71 people suffocated in the back of a truck abandoned on an Austrian highway en route from Hungary, and as thousands headed from Budapest toward Austria on foot, Vienna had agreed with Germany to waive rules requiring refugees to register an asylum claim in the first EU country they reach. |
Indiana zoo locked down briefly after cheetah jumps out of exhibit Posted: 06 Sep 2015 03:17 PM PDT No zoo visitor, staff or cheetah was injured in the incident, Indianapolis Zoo spokeswoman Judy Palermo said. Zoo visitors walk alongside the grassy area, Palermo said. |
