Contraception opt-out violates religious freedom: U.S. appeals court Posted: 17 Sep 2015 10:58 AM PDT A U.S. appeals court has ruled that President Barack Obama's healthcare law violates the rights of religiously affiliated employers by forcing them to help provide contraceptive coverage even though they do not have to pay for it. The split in the circuit courts created makes it more likely that the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the issue in its coming term, which begins in October and runs through June. The law allows religiously affiliated non-profit employers to opt out of paying for contraceptive coverage directly. |

Republican debate brings outsider Fiorina to the fore Posted: 17 Sep 2015 07:40 AM PDT By James Oliphant WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Once among the most powerful women in American business, Carly Fiorina emerged as a leading contender in the 2016 Republican presidential campaign alongside Donald Trump, another outsider from the corporate world. Fiorina's performance in the party's Wednesday night debate elicited praise on social media and from political strategists as she commanded the stage equally with the likes of billionaire Trump, 69, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, 62. The former Hewlett-Packard CEO, Fiorina, 61, was one of Trump's strongest challengers from 10 candidates anxious to pile on the real-estate mogul and former reality-TV star leading in opinion polls. |
Fed begins final day of meeting on crucial rate decision Posted: 17 Sep 2015 06:50 AM PDT The Federal Reserve opened the final day of deliberations Thursday on a crucial interest rate increase that has left global markets and economic policy makers on edge for weeks. After locking its benchmark interest rate at zero percent for nearly seven years, the Fed must decide whether the US and global economies are strong enough to weather a modest hike. Supporters of an increase say the US economy has gained enough strength to begin moving the Fed away from its extraordinary crisis-era policy of easy money to a more normal policy stance. |
California's new, unending fire season takes toll on firefighters Posted: 17 Sep 2015 03:14 AM PDT The damage from California's fast-spreading wildfires is usually expressed in acres destroyed, homes razed or people killed. Currently in the fourth year of a devastating drought, California has seen 1,500 more blazes this year than last. "I have no idea when I'm going home," said Scott Gillespie as he finished a 24-hour shift fighting the 70,000-acre "Valley Fire" near Napa in what is shaping up to be a record year. |
Pope's U.S. visit may deepen Republicans' Hispanic problem Posted: 16 Sep 2015 10:29 PM PDT Bob Cortes, a Republican legislator in Florida, fears he is losing the Hispanic vote that helped get him elected. The culprits: Republican presidential candidates such as Donald Trump who are railing against immigration. The upcoming visit by the most socially progressive pope in generations threatens to alienate them even more, driving a further wedge between Cortes' party and the Hispanic voters it needs to win back in order to retake the White House. |
Big quake rattles north Chile, sets off small tsunami waves Posted: 16 Sep 2015 10:14 PM PDT SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A major earthquake just offshore rattled Chileans, killing five people and shaking the Earth so strongly the tremor was felt in places across South America. Authorities worked into the early hours Thursday assessing damage in several coastal towns that saw flooding from small tsunami waves set off by the quake. |
Wal-Mart worker group splits in two; both sides vow to continue wage fight Posted: 16 Sep 2015 09:37 PM PDT CHICAGO/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Wal-Mart Stores Inc worker group that has been one of the loudest voices pushing the retailer to boost wages and improve conditions has splintered over a disagreement about funding and strategic direction, according to people on both sides of the split. Both wings are claiming the name OUR Walmart and vow to continue their work, moves that could sow confusion among supporters. The United Food & Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which for years has provided important funding and resources to the OUR Walmart worker group, will only financially support the wing that it believes represents the broader set of workers. |

Obama invites Texas student arrested for homemade clock to White House Posted: 16 Sep 2015 03:59 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas teenager taken away in handcuffs this week for bringing to his Dallas-area school a homemade clock that staff mistook for a bomb won a personal invitation from President Barack Obama on Wednesday to visit the White House. Ahmed Mohamed, 14, was accused of making a hoax bomb, police in Irving said. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said he is Muslim and the case serves as an example of the climate of hate and manufactured fear around the religion. |
