| Person of interest in Arizona shootings in court on pot charge Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:31 AM PDT Oscar De La Torre Munoz, of Avondale, Arizona, was detained by state troopers on Friday at a Phoenix-area gas station along with an unidentified woman who was later released. Authorities have provided few details, but say De La Torre Munoz is being questioned in connection with an investigation into 11 possible vehicle shootings since Aug. 29 on a roughly 10-mile (16-km) stretch of Interstate 10 where it runs through the Phoenix metro area. In a brief appearance before a judge at around 5 a.m. local time, De La Torre Munoz confirmed his name and date of birth, and was read the marijuana possession charge. |

| Spanish police find body of missing U.S. tourist Posted: 12 Sep 2015 06:44 AM PDT Spanish police have found the body of U.S. tourist Denise Pikka Thiem, who went missing in April as she was walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in northwestern Spain, and have detained a suspect. Thiem was last seen near Astorga, in the province of Leon, in early April. "Following months of intense investigations, our agents have found the body of Denise and detained the alleged perpetrator," the head of the Spanish police, Ignacio Cosido, said on Twitter. |

| U.S. seeks to dismiss charges against China-born physicist Posted: 11 Sep 2015 09:33 PM PDT Since a grand jury returned an indictment in May to bring those charges against Xiaoxing Xi, federal prosecutors have obtained additional information, they said in papers filed in federal court in Philadelphia. "The government submits that it is in the interests of justice to dismiss the indictment without prejudice in order to pursue this additional information," U.S. Attorney David Memeger and an assistant stated in the motion, which gave no further details on the nature of the information. Xi, an American citizen born in China who is a professor of physics at Temple University, was arrested in May following his indictment. |

(Reuters) - The California legislature on Friday approved a bill to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients despite opposition from religious and disability rights groups, sending it to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown for his approval or veto. The bill would allow mentally competent patients to request a prescription that would end their lives if two doctors agree the patients have only six months to live. The measure, based on a similar law in Oregon, passed the state Senate on Friday on a vote of 23-14, after passing the Assembly on Wednesday. |
