Ex-tennis star Blake says New York cop should be fired for abuse

Tennis: U.S. OpenBy Katie Reilly NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former professional tennis player James Blake said on Saturday that an undercover policeman who body-slammed him outside a Manhattan hotel in a case of mistaken identity did not deserve to wear an officer's badge, and he told CNN he should be fired for abusing his powers. Blake, who reached a career high of No. 4 in the world and retired two years ago, said he initially thought that it was someone rushing up to give him a hug "or something positive" as he waited alone for a car to take him to the U.S. Open for corporate appearances. Blake is black and the New York City Police Department officer, James Frascatore, is white.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, due back at work Monday after six days behind bars, has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples and her attorneys have said the 49-year-old woman will not violate her conscience when she returns to work. In her absence, deputy clerks have been issuing licenses and have said they would continue to do so.

Person of interest in Arizona shootings in court on pot charge

Oscar De La Torre Munoz, of Avondale, Arizona, was detained by state troopers on Friday at a Phoenix-area gas station along with an unidentified woman who was later released. Authorities have provided few details, but say De La Torre Munoz is being questioned in connection with an investigation into 11 possible vehicle shootings since Aug. 29 on a roughly 10-mile (16-km) stretch of Interstate 10 where it runs through the Phoenix metro area. In a brief appearance before a judge at around 5 a.m. local time, De La Torre Munoz confirmed his name and date of birth, and was read the marijuana possession charge.

Spanish police find body of missing U.S. tourist

Spanish police have found the body of U.S. tourist Denise Pikka Thiem, who went missing in April as she was walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in northwestern Spain, and have detained a suspect. Thiem was last seen near Astorga, in the province of Leon, in early April. "Following months of intense investigations, our agents have found the body of Denise and detained the alleged perpetrator," the head of the Spanish police, Ignacio Cosido, said on Twitter.

"The government submits that it is in the interests of justice to dismiss the indictment without prejudice in order to pursue this additional information," U.S. Attorney David Memeger and an assistant stated in the motion, which gave no further details on the nature of the information. Xi, an American citizen born in China who is a professor of physics at Temple University, was arrested in May following his indictment.

(Reuters) - The California legislature on Friday approved a bill to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients despite opposition from religious and disability rights groups, sending it to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown for his approval or veto. The bill would allow mentally competent patients to request a prescription that would end their lives if two doctors agree the patients have only six months to live. The measure, based on a similar law in Oregon, passed the state Senate on Friday on a vote of 23-14, after passing the Assembly on Wednesday.
