As Republicans slam Planned Parenthood, shutdown threatens Posted: 09 Sep 2015 12:06 PM PDT By David Lawder and Lindsay Dunsmuir WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional Republicans showed no signs on Wednesday of having a clear plan for averting a U.S. government shutdown in three weeks over funding for Planned Parenthood, though senior party leaders have made clear they want to avoid that scenario. After an hour-long, closed-door meeting of fellow party members, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said there were "no decisions at this point" on the content of a stopgap funding bill for the federal fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. Boehner, speaking to reporters for the first time since returning to Washington after a five-week summer recess that ended on Tuesday, also could not say when he would bring a spending bill to the House floor for passage. |

Defiant Kentucky clerk's backers want aides fired over marriage licenses to gays Posted: 09 Sep 2015 08:12 AM PDT Supporters of Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples due to her religious beliefs, said on Wednesday that any of her deputies who provide such documents without her permission should be fired. U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered Davis released on Tuesday after six days in jail, warning her not to interfere with her deputy clerks who are issuing the licenses, or face further sanctions. Bunning had found Davis, clerk for Rowan County in eastern Kentucky, in contempt after she stopped issuing licenses to any couples, citing her belief as an Apostolic Christian that a marriage can only be between a man and a woman. |
Baltimore board OKs $6.4 million settlement to Freddie Gray family Posted: 09 Sep 2015 07:21 AM PDT The Baltimore Board of Estimates on Wednesday unanimously approved a $6.4 million settlement to the family of Freddie Gray, a black man who died from injuries suffered in police custody. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, a member of the financial control panel, has said the payment would resolve any related civil claims against the city and has no bearing on the trials of six police officers charged in Gray's death in April. The settlement came a day before a hearing over whether the trials should be moved from the city. |

Group urges Republican candidates to defund Planned Parenthood Posted: 09 Sep 2015 02:21 AM PDT By Ginger Gibson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An influential conservative group is calling on Republican presidential candidates to vow they will veto any future funding for women's healthcare provider Planned Parenthood, which is under fire from abortion opponents. In a letter seen by Reuters that is being sent to all party hopefuls in the 2016 White House race, the ForAmerica advocacy group asks candidates to make "a firm commitment" to starve Planned Parenthood of federal funding. ForAmerica Chairman Brent Bozell - who has personally endorsed Republican Senator Ted Cruz for 2016 - also calls on the candidates to say whether they would launch an investigation by the Department of Justice into Planned Parenthood. |

Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' debut: A wild, funny night Posted: 08 Sep 2015 10:48 PM PDT I particularly liked the way Jeb Bush and Stephen Colbert dissected the Republican candidate's campaign logo: "Jeb!" Here, Bush had the best lines: "It connotes excitement," he said, and depending on a voter's point of view, he noted, it suggested either "happiness or deep anger." The show began with a taped piece—Colbert singing the National Anthem with various citizens in various cities around America, culminating with Jon Stewart, dressed as an umpire, bellowing, "Play ball!" Colbert told a few jokes standing up and told a few more sitting down, behind his desk, many of them about Donald Trump. Jimmy Fallon made a cameo appearance via video, as Colbert pretended to interrupt his show and allowed Fallon to plug his guests for Tuesday night's Tonight Show, a mildly gutsy move. Before you squawk about commercial sell-out, however, let me remind you that Colbert was merely connecting back into more distant talk-show history—that sort of thing was occasionally done by Steve Allen and Jack Paar, among others. First guest George Clooney appeared with a nice salt-and-pepper goatee. |
Arizona police report nine possible shootings along interstate highway Posted: 08 Sep 2015 09:43 PM PDT The number of possible vehicle shootings along a stretch of freeway in Phoenix has jumped to nine over the last 10 days, the head of Arizona's state police said on Tuesday. Colonel Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said the attacks continued following two possible shootings early Tuesday on Interstate 10, the southernmost transcontinental highway in the U.S. The shootings began on Aug. 29 along a roughly 10-mile segment of the highway when gunfire shattered the windshield of a sport utility vehicle, authorities said. |

Oregon judge accused of blocking gay marriage applicants, hanging Hitler picture Posted: 08 Sep 2015 07:29 PM PDT An Oregon judge who refused to perform same-sex marriages is facing multiple complaints in a state ethics investigation, including that he put up a picture of Adolf Hitler in the Salem courthouse, a state judicial commission said on Tuesday. A U.S. Supreme Court decision in late June legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states, but a small number of elected clerks and lower-court judges have voiced opposition on religious grounds, including Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis who was released from jail on Tuesday after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. In addition to the wedding refusal, Day faces complaints of putting up a picture of Hitler in the Marion County courthouse and allowing a veteran with a felony to handle a firearm. |
