Warmer air caused ice shelf collapse off Antarctica Posted: 11 Sep 2014 12:13 PM PDT Warmer air triggered the collapse of a huge ice shelf off Antarctica in 2002, according to a report on Thursday that may help scientists predict future break-ups around the frozen continent. Antarctica is a key to sea level rise, which threatens coastal areas around the world.. It has enough ice to raise seas by 57 meters (190 feet) if it ever all melted, meaning that even a tiny thaw at the fringes is a concern. Until now, the exact cause of the collapse of the Larsen-B ice shelf, a floating mass of ice bigger than Luxembourg at the end of glaciers in the Antarctic Peninsula, had been unknown. |

More mediation ordered over potential Detroit bankruptcy deal Posted: 11 Sep 2014 10:37 AM PDT A federal judge on Thursday ordered ongoing mediation in Detroit's historic bankruptcy over a potential settlement between the city and one of its fiercest creditors, while adding holdout creditor Financial Guaranty Insurance Co to the list of parties whose attendance is required. District Judge Gerald Rosen, the chief mediator in the bankruptcy case, ordered that mediation, which began on Thursday, will also take place on Friday and will continue "day-to-day thereafter as deemed necessary, until released by the mediators." The city and Syncora Guarantee Inc, the bond insurer that had been the fiercest holdout creditor in the case, notified the U.S. Sealing that deal would leave FGIC, another bond insurer, as the only major holdout creditor left in the biggest-ever municipal bankruptcy Detroit filed in July 2013. FGIC, which has a $1.1 billion exposure in the case from guaranteeing payments on the city's pension debt, issued a statement on Wednesday that said it remains open to "good faith settlement discussions." Both Syncora and FGIC faced recoveries of 10 cents on the dollar or less in the bankruptcy as other creditors including the city's pension funds reached deals. |

Score one for sharks: New curbs on threatening trade Posted: 11 Sep 2014 07:46 AM PDT The 178 members of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) agreed in March 2013 to tighten regulations on the trade of the three types of hammerhead shark, the porbeagle and oceanic whitetip shark, and two types of manta ray. "The listing was a victory for science over politics," Andy Cornish, who heads a shark preservation initiative backed by WWF and wildlife trade monitoring network Traffic, said in a statement. More than 70 million sharks are killed worldwide every year, according to WWF, with high demand for shark fins in Asia the biggest driver of the overfishing. Traffic has estimated the total value of the shark fin trade at more than $480 million per year, with the fish hunted for their meat, leather, liver oil and cartilage. |
Sacramento shoots for soccer after success at keeping NBA Kings Posted: 11 Sep 2014 06:44 AM PDT By Sharon Bernstein SACRAMENTO Calif. (Reuters) - After securing its perch as a pro-basketball city amid much controversy last year, Sacramento is now aiming to add Major League Soccer, a move that could help revitalize the California capital and mark it as a regional center for sports. The minor league Sacramento Republic FC soccer club, brought to town this spring as part of the effort to persuade Major League Soccer (MLS) that the city could support a team, has been selling out tickets since its first match attracted 20,000 fans. "It's hard not to be impressed," said MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche. "They're setting records there." Sacramento is making its play for soccer just a year after Mayor Kevin Johnson, himself a former NBA star, led a successful effort to keep the former owners of the Kings basketball team from selling that franchise to a group that wanted to move them to Seattle. |

Florida's new insurance sector may be 'accident waiting to happen' Posted: 11 Sep 2014 04:25 AM PDT By Barbara Liston ORLANDO Fla. (Reuters) - As Florida seeks to revive its private home insurance market after almost a decade without a hurricane, homeowners are pouring $6 billion a year in premiums into a new generation of small, in-state insurance companies with an unproven record of withstanding a major hurricane. A consumer-oriented rating agency, Weiss Rating, recently awarded the companies a median grade of C-minus, and even without a major storm to drive up claims, 11 of them have already failed in Florida since 2006, according to state records. "This is an accident waiting to happen," said Gavin Magor, senior financial analyst with Weiss, a national agency with a reputation for tough ratings based in Jupiter, Florida. Responding to the Weiss ratings, Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, a trade association, said all the companies meet state regulations, noting that other rating agencies gave higher grades. |
Pistorius faces justice as judge starts verdict Posted: 11 Sep 2014 03:08 AM PDT By Stella Mapenzauswa PRETORIA (Reuters) - Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee who became one of the biggest names in world athletics, faced justice on Thursday as a South African judge started her verdict in his murder trial, a decision that could put him behind bars for 25 years. In a fitting reminder of how South Africa has changed in the 20 years since apartheid, the fate of Pistorius, a wealthy white man from privileged roots, rests in the hands of a 66-year-old black woman from Soweto, Judge Thokozile Masipa. As Masipa began her methodical review of the 41-day trial and the charges - murder and three lesser, unrelated firearms offences - a pained and forlorn Pistorius bowed his head in the dock, tears welling up in his eyes. Masipa, only the second black woman to rise to the bench in South Africa, has remained impassive throughout the often dramatic and gruesome court proceedings, seemingly impervious to the global interest in a case that has drawn comparisons to the 1995 murder trial of American football star OJ Simpson. |

Judgement day for Oscar Pistorius Posted: 11 Sep 2014 12:49 AM PDT By Ed Cropley JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - After 41 days of tears, anguish and at times gruesome testimony in the Pretoria High Court, Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee who became one of the biggest names in athletics, will learn this week whether he will spend the next 25 years behind bars. In a fitting reminder of how South Africa has changed in the 20 years since apartheid, the fate of Pistorius, a wealthy white man from privileged roots, rests in the hands of a 66-year-old black woman from Soweto, Judge Thokozile Masipa. Throughout the on-off six-month trial, Masipa - only the second black woman to rise to the bench in South Africa - has remained calm and impassive, seemingly impervious to the global interest in a case that has drawn comparisons to the 1995 murder trial of American football star OJ Simpson in California. For Pistorius, the options when Masipa starts delivering her judgement on Thursday, winding up probably on Friday, are stark. |
Judgement day for 'Blade Runner' Pistorius Posted: 10 Sep 2014 11:01 PM PDT Pretoria (South Africa) (AFP) - "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius appears in court on Thursday to face judgement over the killing of his model girlfriend, ending a six-month trial that turned the amputee's private life into a global spectacle. The 27-year-old celebrity athlete faces life behind bars -- and notoriety that would eclipse his athletic achievements -- if found guilty of deliberately killing lover Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. Judge Thokozile Masipa's ruling on charges of murder and three firearms offences will likely be laid out in two days of careful legal argument and then a final verdict, perhaps on Friday. Nearly 40 witnesses testified, including Pistorius, who broke down, weeping and at times vomiting as he heard how the 29-year-old blonde's head "exploded" like a watermelon under the impact of his hollow-point bullet. |

NFL says looking into report it had Ray Rice video in April Posted: 10 Sep 2014 09:13 PM PDT The NFL said on Wednesday it was unaware of any of its officials obtaining a video five months ago showing former player Ray Rice knocking out his then-fiancee in an elevator, but it will "look into" a report that it received the clip in April. A law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press he had sent the video of the February incident to a league official in April because he wanted the NFL to have it before deciding how to punish Rice. The NFL has steadfastly insisted it had not seen the video until it went viral on Monday. We are not aware of anyone in our office who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday," Greg Aiello, a spokesman for the National Football League, told Reuters. |
