Man tied to deadly 2012 meningitis outbreak arrested in Boston Posted: 04 Sep 2014 08:50 AM PDT Glenn Adam Chin, 46, had been a supervising pharmacist at the former New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Massachusetts, which produced the tainted steroids that provoked the worst outbreak of fungal meningitis in U.S. Attorney's office in Boston is continuing its criminal probe into the matter, but arrested Chin because of his plans to board a plane to Hong Kong at Boston Logan International Airport, officials said. He is the first person to face criminal charges related to the incident, which pushed NECC into bankruptcy and led to stricter national regulation of custom medication makers. Medications compounded by NECC were prepared, filled and held under unsanitary conditions, according to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Benedict Celso. |

U.S. tax revenue to rise if Obama legalizes some immigrants -report Posted: 04 Sep 2014 02:56 AM PDT The group, which has close ties to the Obama administration, estimated $21.2 billion in additional payroll taxes would be collected over five years under one scenario available to Obama, who has made immigration reform a priority of his second term. "Many workers and employers will be able to emerge from the underground economy and pay payroll taxes for the first time," the report said. Obama, who had strong support from the Latino community in his 2012 re-election, had pushed Congress to pass a bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for some of the 11.7 million undocumented people in the United States. |

Family of Hawaii toddler who died after dental work settles suit Posted: 03 Sep 2014 11:13 PM PDT By Malia Mattoch McManus HONOLULU (Reuters) - Relatives of a 3-year-old Hawaii girl who suffered brain injuries and died after undergoing a dental procedure that went awry late last year have settled the malpractice lawsuit brought in the case, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday. The attorney, L. Richard Fried Jr., said terms of the agreement with the dentist's insurance company were confidential, "but we are very happy with the settlement." He added that an investigation by state authorities was continuing. The toddler, Finley Boyle, visited Dr. Lilly Geyer and her Island Dentistry for Children practice in Honolulu on Dec. 3 for extensive dental work that was to include four root canals and multiple cavity fillings, according to court documents. Island Dentistry for Children has since closed permanently. |
