Heavy rains pound Phoenix, close roads and schools Posted: 08 Sep 2014 12:35 PM PDT By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - A major storm packing heavy rains pounded the Phoenix area early on Monday, forcing schools to cancel classes and closing roads including sections of two major freeways. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer declared a statewide emergency for areas affected by the severe rainfall and flooding. A record-setting 3.29 inches of rain landed on Sky Harbor International Airport, beating the 2.91 inches that fell in September 1939 for the most rainfall in a single day in Phoenix. "We've made it through the worst," Mark O'Malley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, said late on Monday morning. |
White House says Obama wants Congress to invest in counter-terrorism fund Posted: 08 Sep 2014 11:48 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama wants Congress to inject money into a counter-terrorism fund to train and equip partners in other countries to fight extremists, an initiative that would be a core component of his plan to address Islamic State fighters, the White House said on Monday. Obama believes he currently has the authority he needs to address the threat Islamic State poses to American citizens, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. ... |
3 Italian nuns sexually assaulted, murdered in Burundi Posted: 08 Sep 2014 11:02 AM PDT By Patrick Nduwimana BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - Three Italian nuns were found killed, two of them raped and decapitated, over the weekend in the north of Burundi's capital, officials and a priest in the African state said on Monday. Father Mario Pulicini, who is responsible for the parish in a northern suburb of Bujumbura, named two of the nuns as Lucia Pulici, who was 75 and due to celebrate her birthday on Monday, and Olga Raschietti, 82. The third nun, 79-year-old Bernadetta Boggian, was found dead early on Monday morning, he told Reuters. Evidence showed that two of the nuns had been raped before they were killed, police spokesman Hermenegilde Harimenshi said. |
Yosemite National Park wildfire burns four square miles Posted: 08 Sep 2014 10:17 AM PDT By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A wildfire that prompted the rescue of 185 hikers in Yosemite National Park has blackened four square miles of back country wilderness, officials said Monday, as crews hoped rainy weather would give them a chance to gain some control over the flames. The so-called Meadow Fire, which flared out of control on Sunday afternoon, stranded 85 hikers on top of Half Dome, the park's signature rock formation, requiring them to be flown out by helicopter, Yosemite spokeswoman Ashley Mayer said. Another 100 park visitors were evacuated from Little Yosemite Valley and a number of hiking trails were closed because of the encroaching flames, Mayer said. There were no reports of injuries or damage to structures from the blaze, which was burning in Yosemite's back country away from populated areas and tourist attractions. |

America's wealth gap 'unsustainable,' may worsen: Harvard study Posted: 08 Sep 2014 04:24 AM PDT The widening gap between America's wealthiest and its middle and lower classes is "unsustainable", but is unlikely to improve any time soon, according to a Harvard Business School study released on Monday. The study, titled "An Economy Doing Half its Job", said American companies - particularly big ones - were showing some signs of recovering their competitive edge on the world stage since the financial crisis, but that workers would likely keep struggling to demand better pay and benefits. "We argue that such a divergence is unsustainable," according to the report, which was based on a survey of 1,947 of Harvard Business School alumni around the globe, and which highlighted problems with the U.S. The results marked an improvement from a 2012 Harvard Business School survey of its alumni showing 58 percent of respondents expecting a decline in U.S. |

Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy dead at 93 Posted: 08 Sep 2014 02:17 AM PDT Cathy, who was Chick-fil-A's chairman emeritus, died at home in the presence of loved ones, the privately held Atlanta-based company said. In 2012 the chicken sandwich chain made headlines when its president Dan Cathy -- the founder's son -- made comments to the Baptist Press citing "prideful" supporters of same-sex marriage and defending the company's support of "the biblical definition of the family unit." The comments ignited a cultural firestorm, triggering protests including "kiss-ins" by same-sex couples outside some stores, as well as support from social conservatives and fans of its products. Chick-fil-A issued a statement saying its culture is "to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect - regardless of their belief, creed, race, sexual orientation or gender." S. U.S. Coast Guard calls off search for crashed U.S. plane Posted: 07 Sep 2014 03:30 PM PDT By Horace Helps KINGSTON Jamaica (Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard said on Sunday it abandoned its search for a small, private American plane that strayed into the Caribbean on a flight to Florida before apparently crashing near Jamaica, with the pilot and at least one passenger presumed dead. The plane, whose pilot became unresponsive during the flight, went down northeast of Jamaica on Friday after veering off course and triggering a U.S. Coast Guard had deployed a cutter, search helicopter and other crews to assist in looking for wreckage and possible survivors, but those units returned to base on Sunday, said Petty Officer Sabrina Laberdesque. |
Lesbian teacher says fired by Detroit Catholic school over pregnancy Posted: 07 Sep 2014 01:41 PM PDT By Aaron Foley DETROIT (Reuters) - A Detroit-area teacher says she was fired from her post at a private Catholic all-girls high school after she and her lesbian partner announced they were expecting a child through non-traditional means. Hundreds of supporters for Barb Webb, a teacher at Marian High School in suburban Bloomfield Hills, rallied on Sunday at the school after she posted on Facebook that she had been forced from her job after she become pregnant "outside the Catholic way." Webb said she was asked late last month to choose between resigning or being fired, but decided against leaving voluntarily although she said the school had offered healthcare for the remainder of the school year had she chosen to resign. "I feel sickened for my colleagues who are disgusted with this decision but are forced into silence for fear for their own jobs," Webb wrote on her Facebook page in which she detailed her firing, the latest in a string of such actions involving gay and lesbian employees at U.S. |
