Heavy rains pound Phoenix, close roads and schools Posted: 08 Sep 2014 12:35 PM PDT By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - A major storm packing heavy rains pounded the Phoenix area early on Monday, forcing schools to cancel classes and closing roads including sections of two major freeways. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer declared a statewide emergency for areas affected by the severe rainfall and flooding. A record-setting 3.29 inches of rain landed on Sky Harbor International Airport, beating the 2.91 inches that fell in September 1939 for the most rainfall in a single day in Phoenix. "We've made it through the worst," Mark O'Malley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, said late on Monday morning. |

America's wealth gap 'unsustainable,' may worsen: Harvard study Posted: 08 Sep 2014 04:24 AM PDT The widening gap between America's wealthiest and its middle and lower classes is "unsustainable", but is unlikely to improve any time soon, according to a Harvard Business School study released on Monday. The study, titled "An Economy Doing Half its Job", said American companies - particularly big ones - were showing some signs of recovering their competitive edge on the world stage since the financial crisis, but that workers would likely keep struggling to demand better pay and benefits. "We argue that such a divergence is unsustainable," according to the report, which was based on a survey of 1,947 of Harvard Business School alumni around the globe, and which highlighted problems with the U.S. The results marked an improvement from a 2012 Harvard Business School survey of its alumni showing 58 percent of respondents expecting a decline in U.S. |

Lesbian teacher says fired by Detroit Catholic school over pregnancy Posted: 07 Sep 2014 01:41 PM PDT By Aaron Foley DETROIT (Reuters) - A Detroit-area teacher says she was fired from her post at a private Catholic all-girls high school after she and her lesbian partner announced they were expecting a child through non-traditional means. Hundreds of supporters for Barb Webb, a teacher at Marian High School in suburban Bloomfield Hills, rallied on Sunday at the school after she posted on Facebook that she had been forced from her job after she become pregnant "outside the Catholic way." Webb said she was asked late last month to choose between resigning or being fired, but decided against leaving voluntarily although she said the school had offered healthcare for the remainder of the school year had she chosen to resign. "I feel sickened for my colleagues who are disgusted with this decision but are forced into silence for fear for their own jobs," Webb wrote on her Facebook page in which she detailed her firing, the latest in a string of such actions involving gay and lesbian employees at U.S. |
