U.S. bombs Islamic State in Iraq Posted: 09 Sep 2014 12:31 PM PDT US warplanes carried out more airstrikes against jihadists in western Iraq, the Pentagon said Tuesday, as President Barack Obama prepared to present his plan to defeat the Sunni extremists. American fighter jets, attack and drone aircraft conducted five bombing raids on Monday and Tuesday near the massive Haditha Dam in Anbar province, said the US Central Command, which oversees forces in the region. The US military said the strikes were in "support of Iraqi Security Forces and Sunni tribes protecting the Haditha Dam" against militants from the so-called Islamic State (IS). The bombing "destroyed or damaged" eight IS armed vehicles, including two that were "transporting anti-aircraft artillery," five other vehicles and one transport vehicle, Central Command said. |

Though facing deportation by U.S., kids learn to 'pledge allegiance' Posted: 09 Sep 2014 11:43 AM PDT By Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama wants to promptly send them home to Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, but until they are shipped out children caught entering the United States illegally are getting an old-fashioned dose of American patriotism. The surge of children making the treacherous journey in hopes of reuniting with relatives living in the United States has brought chaos to the border, stretched Washington's ability to cope with a humanitarian crisis and prompted an immigration backlash in some American communities. |

U.S. takes halting steps to plug infrastructure funding gap Posted: 09 Sep 2014 07:58 AM PDT The Obama administration on Tuesday announced a series of measures to help shore up crumbling U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said investing in infrastructure has historically been one of the best ways to create jobs and boost economic growth, but spending has fallen over the past decade, as two-thirds of roads are now in disrepair, and one out of nine U.S. "Looking ahead, if we want to continue to lead the world, we are going to need modern highways and railroads, first-rate tunnels and bridges, and efficient power networks and water systems," Lew said at an infrastructure summit Treasury hosted with the Department of Transportation. Republicans and Democrats are at odds over how to provide a more permanent fix to the infrastructure funding problem, and the White House is highlighting the need for the private sector to step in. |

Jury selection begins in trial of Florida 'race war' planner Posted: 09 Sep 2014 03:34 AM PDT By Barbara Liston ORLANDO Fla. If deemed mentally fit, California college gunman set for trial: local CBS affiliate Posted: 09 Sep 2014 01:43 AM PDT (Reuters) - A California grand jury has indicted a former nursing student with seven counts of murder in a shooting rampage at a Christian college, freeing prosecutors from having to present their case to a judge before proceeding to trial if the defendant is later declared mentally competent, a local CBS broadcaster reported. An Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled in January last year that Korean-American One Goh was mentally incompetent to stand trial. If a judge determines at a later point that Goh has regained his mental competency, he would be ordered to stand trial in the high-profile case. Broadcaster CBS cited Alameda County prosecutors in saying that charges originally brought against Goh were incorporated in the Aug. 22 indictment. |
