Highway swallowed by Washington mudslide to reopen, six months later Posted: 22 Sep 2014 12:30 PM PDT By Victoria Cavaliere SEATTLE (Reuters) - A Washington state highway destroyed by a deadly mudslide in March was scheduled to reopen this week, officials said on Monday, as residents of a rural community devastated by the disaster marked its six-month anniversary. Forty-three people were killed when a rain-soaked hillside collapsed above the Stillaguamish River on March 22, unleashing a torrent of mud that swallowed 50 houses near Oso, 55 miles northeast of Seattle. 2 countries have managed to halt Ebola spread, WHO says Posted: 22 Sep 2014 05:33 AM PDT GENEVA (Reuters) - Two of the five countries affected by the world's worst ever Ebola outbreak are managing to halt the spread of the disease, the World Health Organization said on Monday, although the overall death toll rose to 2,793 out of 5,762 cases. "On the whole, the outbreaks in Senegal and Nigeria are pretty much contained," a WHO statement said. There were no new deaths in Guinea, four in Sierra Leone and 39 in Liberia. (Reuters) - An Alabama woman accused of running her 9-year-old granddaughter to death as punishment for eating forbidden chocolates and lying about it was set to go on trial on Monday. Joyce Hardin Garrard, 49, stands accused of forcing Savannah Hardin to run non-stop for three hours in February 2012. Authorities say the girl collapsed, went into seizures and died days later at a Birmingham hospital. NYC police officer dies, 8 hurt in van crash Posted: 21 Sep 2014 11:40 PM PDT (Reuters) - A New York City police officer died, and eight others were injured when their van crashed into a barrier in the Bronx on Sunday morning, police said. Michael Williams, 25, was thrown through a back window of the police van after it hit a barrier around 5 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, the New York Police Department said in a statement. The eight other officers in the van were also hurt, though none of their injuries were life-threatening, police said. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. ... |
