Walker goes Scott-free as judges shut down probe Posted: 16 Jul 2015 11:45 AM PDT The Wisconsin Supreme Court today ordered a special state prosecutor to shut down a controversial investigation into Gov. Scott Walker's political fundraising and "permanently destroy" all the evidence they have collected, handing Walker a huge political victory just days after he formally announced his run for president. |
Shootings at multiple places near Tennessee college, officer hit Posted: 16 Jul 2015 10:55 AM PDT By Brendan O'Brien and Suzannah Gonzales (Reuters) - There have been shootings at multiple places in Chattanooga, including near a U.S. Army Reserve center and a Navy recruiting center in the Tennessee city on Thursday, and a police officer was hit by gunfire, officials and local media reports said. There have been several shootings at several different locations," said Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman John Harmon. "It's a fluid situation," said Harmon, whose agency was helping local authorities. |

Gay marriage ruling leaves U.S. firms unclear on spousal benefits Posted: 16 Jul 2015 04:35 AM PDT The Supreme Court was definitive in its decision to legalize gay marriage nationwide, but what is far from clear is whether U.S. companies must offer corporate benefits to same-sex spouses. Many large and mid-sized employers are self-insured, which means their benefits are governed by a 1974 act that has no language on preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act allows companies to bypass differing state laws that complicate healthcare options for employees spread out across the country. |

Suspected South Carolina church gunman due in court for hearing Posted: 16 Jul 2015 02:24 AM PDT The suspected gunman in the slaying of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston last month is expected in court on Thursday when a judge will hear a media challenge to a ban on the release of documents in the case. Dylann Roof, 21, was arrested a day after the killings and charged with nine counts of murder in what authorities say was a racially motivated massacre. Nicholson said he issued the order "due to substantial pre-trial publicity" that could jeopardize Roof's right to a fair trial. |

Three bodies have been recovered in Johnson County, Kentucky, which was hard hit by flooding, and a fourth person drowned in southern Indiana after his car was swept into a creek, officials said. Obama defends Iran deal as 'once in a lifetime' opportunity Posted: 15 Jul 2015 03:59 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama staunchly defended a framework nuclear agreement with Iran as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to prevent a bomb and bring longer-term stability to the Middle East. He insisted the U.S. would stand by Israel if it were to come under attack, but acknowledged that his pursuit of diplomacy with Tehran has caused strain with the close ally. |
