Lawyers to argue over fate of Colorado movie gunman Holmes Posted: 30 Jul 2015 10:37 AM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - Lawyers for both sides in Colorado's movie massacre trial are due to make closing arguments on Thursday in the penalty phase, then jurors will decide if mitigating factors such as mental illness outweigh aggravating ones that could justify the death penalty. The ordinance prohibits Los Angeles residents from possessing a handgun or rifle magazine that fits more than 10 rounds. The law would take effect 30 days after Mayor Eric Garcetti signs it, a move that he was "eager" to make, he said in a statement. Similar ordinances in San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California, have so far withstood legal challenges and last year, a federal judge upheld a Colorado law banning magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. |

Water parks and piano class: Colorado movie gunman's childhood Posted: 30 Jul 2015 03:27 AM PDT Defense lawyers trying to save the life of Colorado movie rampage gunman James Holmes have called witness after witness to take the stand just feet from where he sits, tethered to the floor, expressionless. At the beginning of his trial in late April, defense lawyers said they would show how Holmes was a normal, happy, social child who could have belonged to any of the jurors, before he was struck by severe mental illness. |

Planned Parenthood reports second website hack in a week Posted: 29 Jul 2015 09:32 PM PDT Websites operated by Planned Parenthood and its political branch, Planned Parenthood Action, were clogged by a wide-scale "distributed denial-of-service," or DDoS, attack, the organization said. Service was restored shortly after the attack, but the group opted to keep its websites offline for the remainder of the day "to ensure that we are fully protected," Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement. Visitors to Planned Parenthood sites, which serve some 200,000 people a day seeking information on reproductive health, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, parenting, abortion and other topics, were being redirected to its Facebook pages for the time being, Laguens said. |
