Family, supporters mark anniversary of New York chokehold death Posted: 17 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT Family and supporters on Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the chokehold death of Eric Garner with rallies and vigils demanding police reforms and justice in the controversial case. Protesters headed to Staten Island, the New York City borough where Garner, a 43-year-old black father of six, died last July 17 after New York police put him in a banned chokehold. Video footage of police arresting Garner, in which he could be heard repeatedly saying he couldn't breathe, went viral on the Internet, helping draw attention to the case. |

A year after Ferguson, U.S. civil rights groups gather pace Posted: 17 Jul 2015 04:31 AM PDT By Edward McAllister NEW YORK (Reuters) - Taurean Russell was preparing to coach high school football in St. Louis last Aug. 9 when his Twitter feed began flashing images of a black teenager lying facedown on the street of a nearby suburb, shot dead by police. Within hours came photos of the dead 18-year-old's stepfather, stony-faced, holding a cardboard sign that read: "Ferguson police just executed my unarmed son!!!" "I've seen dead bodies on the street all my life," said Russell, 30. "Michael Brown's death was different. |
Tornado caused 'significant' damage to Illinois town: police Posted: 17 Jul 2015 12:36 AM PDT (Reuters) - A tornado ripped through a town in western Illinois on Thursday, badly damaging homes, downing power lines and causing several gas leaks, state police said. Colorado movie massacre gunman found guilty of multiple murders Posted: 16 Jul 2015 06:52 PM PDT Colorado movie massacre gunman James Holmes was found guilty on Thursday of multiple counts of first degree murder, a verdict that enables prosecutors to seek the death penalty for the former graduate student who killed 12 people and wounded 70 at a midnight premiere of a Batman film in 2012. After a three-month trial in which hundreds of witnesses testified and thousands of pieces of evidence were presented, jurors deliberated for about a day and a half, then found Holmes guilty on all 165 counts against him. Before the jury was called in at around 4:00 p.m. local time (1800 EDT), Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour warned the packed public gallery to refrain from emotional outbursts. |
Four Marines and gunman killed in Tennessee shootings Posted: 16 Jul 2015 06:36 PM PDT By Rich McKay CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Reuters) - Four Marines were killed on Thursday by a gunman who opened fire at two military offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before being fatally shot in an attack officials called a brazen, brutal act of domestic terrorism. The Federal Bureau of Investigation named the suspect as Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, but said it was too early to speculate on a motive for the rampage, which comes at a time when U.S. military and law enforcement authorities are increasingly concerned about the threat posed by "lone wolves" to domestic targets. NBC News reported that Abdulazeez was a naturalized American who was born in Kuwait. |
Planned Parenthood head sorry for tone in video on fetal tissue use Posted: 16 Jul 2015 05:30 PM PDT Planned Parenthood's president apologized on Thursday for the "tone and statements" of a senior staff member who was secretly recorded in a video that critics say suggests the U.S. reproductive health organization sells aborted fetal tissue. Despite Planned Parenthood's denials of the allegation, the video's release earlier this week has rapidly spurred investigations in the Republican-led U.S. Congress. Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a new video statement that the nonprofit organization does not profit from fetal tissue donation. |
Jurors reach verdict in trial of Colorado movie gunman Posted: 16 Jul 2015 01:57 PM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - The jury in the Colorado movie massacre trial reached a verdict on Thursday, the second day of deliberations in the case of 27-year-old gunman James Holmes, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, a court spokesman said. Holmes' court-appointed attorneys say he suffers schizophrenia, that since high school he has heard voices ordering him to kill, and that he was not in control of his actions when he killed 12 people and wounded 70 as they watched a midnight premiere of a Batman film. The jury of nine women and three men submitted several written questions to Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour during their first day of deliberations on Wednesday, including asking for a white board and an index to the thousands of pieces of evidence brought up at trial. |
