Police investigating report of shot at Maryland military hospital

Police were investigating a report of a gunshot heard on Monday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Washington. The U.S. Navy said employees at the sprawling hospital's campus in Bethesda, Maryland, were told to shelter in place as police and security personnel responded to an unconfirmed report of an active shooter. The Walter Reed report came after an unfounded report of a gunshot at the Washington Navy Yard sparked a massive police response on Thursday before the Independence Day holiday.

"Hey Japan, that one was for Pearl Harbor. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A," Twitter user Cloyd Rivers wrote in a tweet that was "favorited" more than 15,000 times and retweeted 10,200 times.

Burt's Bees cofounder Burt Shavitz dead at 80

Shavitz, a "a wild-bearded and free-spirited Maine man" and beekeeper, co-founded the company with artist Roxanne Quimby in 1984, the company said in a statement. "It is with broken hearts that we must convey the saddest news: Burt Shavitz, our co-founder and namesake, has left for greener fields and wilder woods," the company said in a statement on Facebook. A company spokeswoman told USA Today that Shavitz died of respiratory issues on Sunday surrounded by family and friends in Bangor, Maine.

Police kill gunman inside posh downtown Austin hotel

The shootings at the Omni Austin Hotel, about four blocks from the Texas state Capitol, happened just before 5 a.m. CDT, police said. A 911 caller reported a man walking around with a gun in the lobby of the hotel, a sleek high-rise with a soaring atrium overlooking the city's historic Sixth Street district, said Assistant Police Chief Brian Manley. "The 911 operator was able to hear crying in the background as well as yelling," Manley said.
