Facebook must hand over New York users' info to prosecutors, court rules Posted: 21 Jul 2015 01:00 PM PDT Facebook Inc cannot challenge search warrants New York prosecutors used to get information from its site on hundreds of users suspected of Social Security fraud, a state appeals court said on Tuesday, in a decision likely making it harder for New Yorkers to keep their digital lives private. The warrants, which applied to 381 users' photos, private messages and other account information, could only be challenged by individual defendants after prosecutors gathered evidence, the Manhattan-based court unanimously ruled. Facebook was backed in the case by a group of large Internet companies including Google Inc and Microsoft Corp, which argued the case could set a troubling precedent giving prosecutors access to all kinds of digital information. |

State Senator Royce West will make the video public at Prairie View A&M University, near where school employee Sandra Bland, 28, was arrested, said his spokesman, Kelvin Bass. Jailhouse video released on Monday showed a space of about 90 minutes between the last physical check-up of Bland in her cell, and when she was discovered dead, hanging by a plastic trash bag at about 9 a.m. |

Baltimore judge tosses request on evidence in Freddie Gray death case Posted: 21 Jul 2015 08:22 AM PDT State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, who is prosecuting six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, had wanted a Circuit Court hearing to argue for a protective order barring release of evidence. The death of Gray, a 25-year-old black man, from a spinal injury suffered in police custody triggered protests and rioting. Mosby said she was concerned that defense lawyers would leak only evidence that supported their clients' defense, jeopardizing the chance for a fair trial. |

Kerry says Iran vow to defy U.S. is 'very disturbing' Posted: 21 Jul 2015 01:35 AM PDT U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said a speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday vowing to defy American policies in the region despite a deal with world powers over Tehran's nuclear program was "very disturbing". Ayatollah Khamenei told supporters on Saturday that U.S. policies in the region were "180 degrees" opposed to Iran's, at a speech in a Tehran mosque punctuated by chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel". "Even after this deal our policy toward the arrogant U.S. will not change," Khamenei said. |

CEO and President Hisao Tanaka will be replaced by Chairman Masashi Muromachi effective Wednesday, the company said in a statement, adding it was considering appointing outside directors to over half of its board seats. Tanaka's predecessors, Vice Chairman Norio Sasaki and adviser Atsutoshi Nishida, will also step down after the third-party report showed they also played a part in the overstatement of profits going back to the 2008 financial year. |

Colorado cinema gunman's teacher recalls bright, popular boy Posted: 20 Jul 2015 04:44 PM PDT The fifth-grade teacher of Colorado theater gunman James Holmes on Monday described his former pupil as a popular, bright student in testimony which defense lawyers hope will spare the convicted mass murderer from execution. Last week, a jury of nine women and three men found Holmes guilty of fatally shooting 12 moviegoers and wounding 70 others during a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" at a Denver-area multiplex in July 2012. Paul Karrer, a teacher at the central California elementary school that Holmes attended during the 1998-99 school year, was testifying on the third anniversary of the massacre ahead of a sentencing hearing where the same jurors will decide if the 27-year-old should be executed or serve a life sentence. |
