Obama says entrepreneurs in Africa can give hope, deliver growth Posted: 25 Jul 2015 01:57 AM PDT By Jeff Mason and Edith Honan NAIROBI (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama told African entrepreneurs in Kenya on Saturday they could help counter violent ideologies and drive growth in Africa, and said governments had to help by ensuring the rule of law was upheld and by tackling corruption. Obama was addressing a Global Entrepreneurship Summit at the start of the first presidential visit to Kenya, his father's homeland and the biggest economy in east Africa, which has been hit by a spate of attacks by Somali Islamist group al Shabaab. Security was expected to top the agenda in talks later on Saturday with President Uhuru Kenyatta but Obama is also keen to increase business ties with Africa, where China overtook the United States as the continent's biggest trade partner in 2009. |

Federal judge orders information be seized from Arizona sheriff Posted: 24 Jul 2015 08:16 PM PDT A federal judge on Friday ordered U.S. marshals to seize documents from the office of controversial Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio as part of an ongoing racial profiling case. U.S. District Judge Murray Snow issued the order at an emergency hearing he convened after a court-appointed monitor reported that the sheriff's office had failed to turn over information being sought in connection with the case. In a brief order, Snow required that 1,459 identifications apparently taken from people by sheriff's deputies during law enforcement actions and which were about to be destroyed be produced for federal marshals. |
Fiat Chrysler U.S. to recall vehicles to prevent hacking Posted: 24 Jul 2015 06:05 PM PDT By Bernie Woodall and Joseph Menn DETROIT/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler will recall 1.4 million vehicles in the United States to install software to prevent hackers from gaining remote control of the engine, steering and other systems in what federal officials said was the first such action of its kind. The announcement on Friday by FCA US LLC, formerly Chrysler Group LLC, was made days after reports that cybersecurity researchers used a wireless connection to turn off a Jeep Cherokee's engine as it drove, increasing concerns about the safety of Internet-enabled vehicles. The researchers used Fiat Chrysler's telematics system to break into a volunteer's Cherokee being driven on the highway and issue commands to the engine, steering and brakes. |
