Bodies found in search for missing Arizona couple, man arrested Posted: 02 Jul 2015 12:27 PM PDT Two bodies believed to be an Arizona couple who vanished 10 days ago were found on Thursday by sheriff's officials and a man was arrested on suspicion of their murder, authorities said. Mike and Tina Careccia were last seen leaving their home in Maricopa, 30 miles south of Phoenix, on June 22, a son told police. Authorities said Jose Valenzuela, 38, was booked into the Pinal County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder after their remains were discovered on the property where he lives. |

BP reaches $18.7 billion settlement over deadly 2010 spill Posted: 02 Jul 2015 11:00 AM PDT By Terry Wade and Kristen Hays HOUSTON (Reuters) - BP Plc will pay up to $18.7 billion in penalties to the U.S. government and five states to resolve nearly all claims from its deadly Gulf of Mexico oil spill five years ago in the largest corporate settlement in U.S. history. BP shares jumped more than 5 percent in New York trading as investors said the British company, often mentioned as a potential acquisition target, could now turn the page on one of the darkest chapters in its century-long history. Under the agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice and the states, BP will pay at least $12.8 billion for Clean Water Act fines and natural resource damages, plus $4.9 billion to states. |

"More than 54 years ago at the height of the cold war, the United States closed its embassy in Havana. Today, I can announce that the United States has agreed to formally reestablish diplomatic relations with the republic of Cuba and re-open embassies in our respective countries," the president said in the Rose Garden today. |
Amtrak seeks to combine lawsuits over fatal Philadelphia derailment Posted: 01 Jul 2015 03:01 PM PDT The railroad on Tuesday joined many plaintiffs in requesting that the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation appoint U.S. District Judge Legrome Davis, who already oversees 16 cases stemming from the accident, to handle all 22 existing lawsuits plus "numerous" others it expects to be filed. Passengers on Train 188 have sued Amtrak in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey over injuries linked to the May 12 derailment, which occurred when the train left the track along a northbound curve in Philadelphia after traveling at more than twice the speed limit. Amtrak has said its liability from a single accident is capped at $200 million, under a 1997 federal law. |

The new law makes Maine one of few U.S. states to legislate over accusations nationwide that banks used suspect mortgage documentation in home foreclosures after the 2008 credit crisis. The focus of the dispute is Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems (MERS), set up by U.S. banks before the housing bubble of the 2000s. |
U.S. campaign highlights stress of fireworks on combat veterans Posted: 01 Jul 2015 01:22 PM PDT Gourley's husband Justin, who served in the U.S. Navy from 2000 to 2004, is one of about 500,000 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, which can be worsened by the cracks and thunder of celebratory fireworks. This year, in an effort to expose an issue about which many veterans feel shame, the Gourleys launched a sign campaign to educate their neighbors about the effects of fireworks on combat veterans. |
