Federal ranger's gun used in deadly San Francisco shooting: media Posted: 08 Jul 2015 01:04 PM PDT The gun used in a deadly San Francisco shooting that helped spark renewed debate about immigration policy had been stolen from the car of a federal law enforcement ranger, local broadcaster KGO-TV reported on Wednesday. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management told the broadcaster in a statement that the ranger was in San Francisco on official business when his vehicle was broken into. The weapon theft was immediately reported to San Francisco police, the broadcaster reported, citing the BLM statement. |

Confederate flag faces decisive vote in South Carolina legislature Posted: 08 Jul 2015 02:43 AM PDT By Harriet McLeod CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - South Carolina's House of Representatives is due to begin debate Wednesday on a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the state capitol's grounds, where it has flown for five decades despite being viewed by many as a symbol of slavery. The bill passed the state Senate by a wide margin on Tuesday with only three "no" votes and has the backing of South Carolina's Republican Governor Nikki Haley. Its sudden impetus stems from the murders of nine black churchgoers gunned down by a white man on June 17 during Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston, about two hours southeast of the state capital, Columbia. |

New York governor to name special prosecutor for killings by police Posted: 08 Jul 2015 12:47 AM PDT Cuomo told reporters he would issue an executive order valid for one year that would place Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in charge of investigating and prosecuting police-involved killings, taking those cases out of the hands of district attorneys. "We will be the first state in the country to acknowledge the problem and say we're going to create an independent prosecutor who does not have that kind of connection with the organized police departments," Cuomo said, according to the New York Times. Cuomo said the appointment of a special prosecutor would help rebuild public confidence in law enforcement, following several high profile killings of unarmed black men by officers. |
Gunmen kill one, wound three near Baltimore university: police Posted: 08 Jul 2015 12:15 AM PDT Two gunmen emerged from two separate vans and began shooting people just before 11 p.m. local time on Tuesday, campus police from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, said in a statement. The campus police urged people in the area to exercise caution while the gunmen were sought. Baltimore police said on their official Twitter page two men and two women had been struck. |
New York program aims to improve ties between police, teens Posted: 07 Jul 2015 10:50 PM PDT New York City police and teenagers from some of the city's toughest neighborhoods came together on Tuesday at Harlem's historic Apollo Theater for an event designed to build mutual respect and improve their frayed relationship. About 925 New York police officers, most recent graduates of the police academy, joined some 425 community members from across the city's five boroughs for an exchange of empathy and laughter which they agreed is often missing in their daily interactions. The program, Operation Conversation: Cops and Kids, is aimed at improving communication and trust between police and teenagers in New York's low income neighborhoods after years of tension over policing tactics, like the controversial stop-and-frisk policy, and the killing of unarmed black men by white police officers across the country. |
Felon in immigration furor pleads not guilty to San Francisco shooting Posted: 07 Jul 2015 10:32 PM PDT A convicted felon who had been deported five times from the United States to Mexico pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to first degree murder in a San Francisco shooting that has spawned passionate debate about the city's immigration policies. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, 45, was charged with murder on Monday for last week's apparently random shooting of 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle. The gun used in the shooting belonged to a federal agent, anonymous sources told the San Jose Mercury News and the Los Angeles Times. |
China stocks tumble as regulator warns of 'panic' Posted: 07 Jul 2015 08:35 PM PDT Chinese stocks dived on Wednesday after the securities regulator said the tumbling stock market in the world's second-biggest economy was in the grip of "panic sentiment" as investors ignored a battery of support measures from Beijing. Amid signs of the market freezing up as companies scrambled to have trading in their shares suspended, the People's Bank of China said it was watching closely and would guard against systemic regional financial risks. The CSI300 index of the largest listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen fell 5 percent in early trade, while the Shanghai Composite Index was down 4.3 percent. |

"They will be in court tomorrow for arraignment, and we plan to ask that a trial date be set," said Dorinda Carter, spokeswoman for the district attorney general's office. Cory Batey and Brandon Vandenburg, convicted in January, have been free on bond since June 24, the day after the mistrial was declared. |

Groups sue Chicago suburbs for more gun control Posted: 07 Jul 2015 03:54 PM PDT By Fiona Ortiz CHICAGO (Reuters) - A group of civil rights activists on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against three Chicago suburbs to force them to take stricter gun-control measures to stem the flow of weapons into the city's crime-ridden neighborhoods. The complaint filed in Cook County Circuit Court against the towns of Riverdale, Lyons and Lincolnwood said gunshops there, along with stores in Gary, Indiana, supply a fifth of guns seized by police at crime scenes in the city. With between 400-500 murders a year, almost all with guns, Chicago lags other big U.S. cities in bringing down homicides. |
