Maine man dies after trying to light firework on his head Posted: 05 Jul 2015 11:29 AM PDT Devon Staples, 22, of Calais, Maine, was drinking and celebrating the holiday in a friend's backyard when he placed the fireworks mortar tube on his head around 10 p.m., said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. McCausland said it was unclear whether the firework was already lit, or whether Staples lit it once it was on his head. The tube Staples was using was a reusable mortar shell but said McCausland said investigators did not know what type of firework he was attempting to shoot. |

Opinion polls show 'No' ahead in Greek bailout referendum Posted: 05 Jul 2015 09:54 AM PDT By George Georgiopoulos and Michele Kambas ATHENS (Reuters) - Opinion polls released after Greece's bailout referendum on Sunday showed the 'No' vote ahead, suggesting voters had defied warnings from across Europe that rejection of the creditors' terms would set their country on a path out of the euro. No exit polls were conducted, but three opinion polls by GPO, Metron Analysis and MRB all showed the 'No' camp' ahead by three points. A poll by Marc estimated 49.5 to 54.5 percent of Greeks voted 'No' compared to 45.5 to 50.5 percent voting 'Yes', based on surveys conducted through the week. |
Boat explosion in Maryland injures 10 people Posted: 05 Jul 2015 08:49 AM PDT Ten people, including three children, were injured when a boat refueling at a Chesapeake Bay marina in Maryland exploded in flames on Saturday night, authorities said on Sunday. The injured were rushed to local hospitals, including five who were taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center's burn unit in Washington, D.C. The 38-foot cabin cruiser was refueling around 6:30 p.m. ET at a Solomons Island marina, about 75 miles southeast of Washington, when an unknown source ignited the vessel and caused a flash fire, according to the Solomons Volunteer Fire and Rescue department. |
Captured New York fugitive moved to prison from hospital Posted: 05 Jul 2015 08:16 AM PDT Captured prison escapee David Sweat was released on Sunday from a New York hospital where he had been treated for gunshot wounds and moved to a prison more than 250 miles (400 km) from the one he fled, authorities said. Sweat, captured last Sunday following a three-week manhunt, will be locked up alone in a cell for 23 hours a day and placed on suicide watch at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, in the state's Finger Lakes region, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said. Sweat, 35, and accomplice Richard Matt escaped from maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York on June 6. |
Kerry, Zarif meet as Tuesday's Iran nuclear deadline approaches Posted: 05 Jul 2015 06:22 AM PDT By Arshad Mohammed and Parisa Hafezi WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. and Iranian diplomats met for a sixth consecutive day on Sunday to try to resolve obstacles to a nuclear accord, including when Iran would get sanctions relief and what advanced research and development it may pursue. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are trying to meet a Tuesday deadline for a final deal under which Iran would curb its atomic work for more than a decade in exchange for sanctions relief. While they have made some progress on the type of bilateral sanctions relief that Iran may receive, the two sides remain divided on such issues as lifting United Nations sanctions and on research and development using advanced centrifuges. |

Possible security threats, wildfires in the West and rainy weather on the East Coast apparently did little to dampen the spirits of celebrants decked out in red, white and blue from their headbands to their shoelaces. Crowds at Boston's Old State House erupted in applause and cannons shot out tri-color confetti after the annual July Fourth reading of the Declaration of Independence. |
Tunisia declares state of emergency after beach attack Posted: 04 Jul 2015 07:30 PM PDT President Beji Caid Essebsi on Saturday declared a state of emergency following last week's beach massacre claimed by jihadists that he said had left Tunisia facing a "special type of war". In a televised address to the nation, Essebsi said the state of emergency, effective from Saturday for a 30-day period, was decided on after consultations with the parliament speaker and prime minister. A state of emergency, granting special powers to the police and army, was in force for three years up until March 2014, following longtime secular president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's ouster in a 2011 revolution. |

Leaping sturgeon kills five-year-old girl boating in Florida Posted: 04 Jul 2015 04:13 PM PDT Jaylon Rippy was boating with her family on the Suwannee River in northwest Florida near Fanning Springs on Thursday evening when the jumping fish injured the young girl along with her mother and her 9-year-old brother, the state Fish and Wildlife Commission said in a statement. The family members, who were from nearby Trenton, were airlifted to a hospital in Gainesville but the girl did not survive. On Friday, two adults traveling in a boat on the Santa Fe River between the Suwannee River and a Branford area campground were also struck by a leaping sturgeon, Fish and Wildlife Commission officials said in a statement. |
