Ex-Washington state NAACP leader Dolezal: 'I would say I'm black' Posted: 20 Jul 2015 01:12 PM PDT Washington state activist Rachel Dolezal, 37, resigned in June as president of the Spokane chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a leading civil rights organization, amid reports she was falsely claiming to be black. Dolezal came under intense scrutiny when a white couple who identified themselves as her estranged biological parents told U.S. media she has Caucasian roots. "It's taken my entire life to negotiate how to identify, and I've done a lot of research and a lot of studying," Dolezal told Vanity Fair in an interview published on Sunday. |

Maine man faces charges after killing two in wild rampage Posted: 20 Jul 2015 11:48 AM PDT A Maine ex-convict accused of fatally shooting two people, kidnapping a woman and firing wildly at police during a high-speed chase through the state's sparsely populated north faced charges related to the spree on Monday. Dressed in a sleeveless green prison jersey, 35-year-old Anthony Lord appeared via closed-circuit television from the jail in Houlton, Maine, where he has been held since he was arrested on Friday at the end of his alleged rampage. Maine District Court Judge Bernard O'Mara asked the defendant if he understood he faced two counts of murder and one of kidnapping. |

U.S. Republican Jeb Bush backs federal hiring freeze, lobbying rules Posted: 20 Jul 2015 08:03 AM PDT (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said on Monday he would overhaul Washington's culture with a federal balanced budget amendment, a freeze on government hiring and a longer ban on former members of Congress becoming lobbyists. "We need a president willing to challenge the whole culture in our nation's capital – and I mean to do it," Bush, the former Florida governor, said in remarks posted on his campaign website on Monday. Clinton's capital gains tax plan to urge focus on long-term growth Posted: 20 Jul 2015 07:16 AM PDT Presidential contender Hillary Clinton's proposed plan to overhaul capital gains taxes aims to foster long-term growth by taxing some short-term investments at higher rates, an aide for her campaign said on Monday. Although details of the plan have yet to be finalized, it would create a sliding rate scale based on the length of an investment, an aide with the Democratic candidate's campaign said. Under her proposal, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, the rate for the shortest-held investments "would be no lower than the 28 percent proposed rate in President (Barack) Obama's budget, but perhaps higher," the aide said. |
McCain says Trump should apologize to U.S. military families Posted: 20 Jul 2015 05:40 AM PDT Senator John McCain urged Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday to apologize to U.S. military families for saying prisoners of war are not heroes in his first direct response to remarks by Trump. Trump drew a barrage of criticism over the weekend after telling a Republican forum he did not think McCain, a Navy fighter pilot imprisoned for more than five years in Hanoi after being shot down, was a hero because he was captured. "He's not a war hero," Trump said Saturday at a gathering of religious conservatives in Ames, Iowa. |

North Carolina police officer to face trial for 2013 shooting Posted: 20 Jul 2015 04:18 AM PDT Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the manslaughter trial of a North Carolina police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man in one of a series of killings that have sparked a fresh debate on race and justice in the United States. The case dates back to the pre-dawn hours of Sept. 14, 2013, when a 24-year-old former Florida A&M football player, Jonathan Ferrell, wrecked his car and went looking for help in a subdivision outside Charlotte, provoking a 911 call from a young woman who was surprised to find him knocking on her door in the middle of the night and feared a home invasion. Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers responded and when Ferrell approached them, officer Randall Kerrick fired 12 shots at the man, 10 of which hit, killing him. |
