Presidential candidates campaign in July Fourth parades Posted: 04 Jul 2015 12:27 PM PDT Alongside the patriotic music and waving flags Saturday in parades across Iowa and New Hampshire were clear reminders of a presidential race coming up next year: Red balloons promoting "Jeb! 2016," a tractor draped in a Rick Perry banner and dutiful volunteers holding signs and chanting for their chosen candidates. |
IS video shows mass execution in ruins of Syria's Palmyra Posted: 04 Jul 2015 11:06 AM PDT The Islamic State group on Saturday released a video showing 25 Syrian government soldiers being executed by teenagers in the ancient amphitheatre in the city of Palmyra. It shows the soldiers in green and brown military uniforms being shot dead on the amphitheatre's stage in front of an enormous version of the group's black and white flag. IS reportedly carried out more than 200 executions, including of civilians, in and around Palmyra in the period when it captured the city. |

Tunisia's president declares state of emergency after hotel attack Posted: 04 Jul 2015 07:14 AM PDT Tunisia President Beji Caid Essebsi declared a state of emergency on Saturday to hand his government more authority following an Islamic militant attack on a beach hotel, where 38 foreign tourists, mostly Britons, were killed. Tunisia's emergency law temporarily gives the government more executive flexibility, hands the army and police more authority, and restricts certain rights such as the right to public assembly. The attack on the Sousse beach resort last Friday followed a gun attack on the Bardo museum in Tunis in March: two of the worst militant assaults in Tunisia's modern history, and a pressing threat to its vital tourist industry. |

U.S. marks July Fourth amid worries over security, sharks, wildfires Posted: 04 Jul 2015 04:19 AM PDT The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have issued an alert asking local authorities and the public to remain vigilant for possible threats following recent calls for violence by Islamic State leaders. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered increased monitoring statewide for the holiday weekend under the direction of the New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. In New York City, the nation's biggest police force assigned about 7,000 officers and nearly all its counterterrorism personnel to handle security around Independence Day events. |
Oregon marijuana fans look to cash in on new law Posted: 04 Jul 2015 12:47 AM PDT More than a thousand marijuana enthusiasts and entrepreneurs met in Oregon on Friday to swap samples, contacts and business tips in hopes of profiting from the state's new law allowing the recreational use of pot. Licensed growers handed out free tastes, gardening experts displayed organic plant food and artists sold marijuana pipes to participants at the "Weed the People" event. "Cannabis is a great opportunity for us," said D.J. King, a labor organizer with the United Food and Commercial Workers who wants to unionize workers at marijuana grow operations, distributors and retailers. |

Boko Haram kills nearly 200 in 48 hours of Nigeria slaughter Posted: 03 Jul 2015 01:45 PM PDT Boko Haram carried out a fresh wave of massacres in northeastern Nigeria on Friday, locals said, killing nearly 200 people in 48 hours of violence President Muhammadu Buhari blasted as "inhuman and barbaric". A young female suicide bomber also killed 12 worshippers when she blew herself up in a mosque in Borno. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Boko Haram has used both men and young women and girls as human bombs in the past. |
