NATO chief says will have to decide on Afghan pullout soon Posted: 11 Aug 2014 11:32 AM PDT By Adrian Croft BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO will soon be forced to take a decision on a total pullout from Afghanistan unless a deadlock over the country's election ends and a new president signs an agreement allowing foreign forces to stay, the head of the alliance said on Monday. Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Reuters the Sept. 4-5 NATO summit in Wales would be very close to a deadline for taking that decision. "Soon we will have to take tough decisions because if there isn't a legal basis for our continued presence in Afghanistan, we will have to withdraw everything by the end of this year and to do that we will have to start planning ... very soon," he said, without giving a firm date. NATO will end its combat mission in Afghanistan by the end of this year but plans to leave behind a smaller force to train and advise Afghan security forces in their fight against Taliban insurgents. |

After the new Start menu, this might be Windows 9’s second killer feature Posted: 11 Aug 2014 10:25 AM PDT The return of the Start menu and other core desktop features is enough to make many PC users excited for Windows 9's big release next year but now Neowin reports that Microsoft's next big OS is getting another killer feature: Cortana. Cortana, the voice-enabled personal assistant that Microsoft unveiled earlier this year with Windows Phone 8.1, is apparently a prime candidate to make the transition to Windows 9 and Neowin says that the software "is no longer in the phase where it is 'let us see if this works' to a 'let us push this forward and see if we can ship it' stage." For the moment, Neowin says that the desktop version of Cortana isn't a full-screen app like |

'Supermoon' Photos: Biggest Full Moon of 2014 Wows Stargazers Posted: 11 Aug 2014 09:12 AM PDT Photographers around the world ventured outside Sunday (Aug. 10) to snap photos of the bright, full "supermoon" rising in the night sky. August's full moon — called a supermoon because it is occurred when the moon was closest to Earth in its orbit — wowed skywatchers, inspiring some of them to turn their cameras skyward to catch breathtaking views of the biggest full moon of 2014. Some photographers had to wait for a break in the clouds to capture their images, while others chased the moon to different observing sites. "Cloud threatened the party in Wellington, New Zealand, so I drove for a few hours to a location where I have spent many nights photographing the stars at Cape Palliser," photographer Mark Gee told Space.com via email of his submission featuring the moon with a lighthouse. In San Diego, California, photographer Adam Nixon captured spectacular views of the supermoon rising over the city skyline, as well as views of bright moonlight glittering on the San Diego Bay. |

Corruption trial of Virginia governor, wife, enters third week Posted: 11 Aug 2014 07:34 AM PDT By Gary Robertson RICHMOND Va. (Reuters) - The corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and his wife Maureen enters its third week on Monday after testimony that centered on the former first lady's behavior. McDonnell, a Republican, and his wife face 14 counts of corruption and bribery for allegedly accepting $165,000 in gifts and loans from businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. in exchange for supporting his former company Star Scientific, a dietary supplements maker. Testimony during the trial's second week centered on Maureen McDonnell's behavior, with former staffers portraying a volatile first lady who yelled at aides. Matt Conrad, McDonnell's deputy chief of staff, said under questioning by prosecutors on Friday that aides were worried that if some of the gifts hidden by Maureen McDonnell were also intended for the governor they needed to be recorded on financial disclosure forms. |

Top US envoy hails Abadi as Iraq PM nominee Posted: 11 Aug 2014 06:59 AM PDT A senior US diplomat with responsibility for Iraq on Monday congratulated Haidar al-Abadi on being tasked by President Fuad Masum to form a new government as prime minister. "The United States stands ready to fully support a new and inclusive Iraqi government," added Brett McGurk, who is US deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs. Earlier, Iraq's President Fuad Masum had asked Abadi, formerly first deputy speaker of parliament, to set up a new government, despite resistance from incumbent Iraqi leader Nuri al-Maliki. "We welcome the decision by Iraq's President to charge the PM nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc to form a new cabinet," McGurk said, in a tweet. |
South Africa lead Zimbabwe as Du Plessis misses century Posted: 11 Aug 2014 06:42 AM PDT Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock missed out on centuries as South Africa advanced to 334 for seven at tea on day three of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe on Monday. Du Plessis was out for 98 shortly before the lunch interval while De Kock was dismissed for 81 during the afternoon session, which stunted South Africa's progress as they built a lead over Zimbabwe's first innings score of 256 all out. The Proteas added just 10 runs in a 16-over period prior to tea, as JP Duminy and Vernon Philander showed an unwillingness to counter Zimbabwe's defensive tactics. |
Iran's Rouhani blasts critics as 'political cowards' Posted: 11 Aug 2014 06:24 AM PDT Iran's President Hassan Rouhani delivered a broadside Monday at critics of his efforts to engage with the West and seek a nuclear deal, accusing them of political cowardice and mischief. In a speech broadcast live, Rouhani attacked the hardline factions within Iran's parliament who have consistently opposed him since he took office a year ago after a surprise electoral victory. Rouhani, a moderate whose tenure has so far focused on economic and foreign policy rather than social reform, said Iran had to counter three phobias abroad; Such hardliners are "50 years late" Rouhani said, warning that such trenchant opposition would result in more volatility for Iran, rather than "win-win relationships" after years in the diplomatic wilderness. |
RBS confirms it's considering sale of Coutts' international arm Posted: 11 Aug 2014 06:08 AM PDT By Katharina Bart and Saeed Azhar ZURICH/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Royal Bank of Scotland confirmed it was considering selling the international arm of its private bank, a deal one source said could net it as much as $1 billion, as the British government leans on it to focus more on domestic lending. The move means that Coutts, founded in the 18th century and best known as banker to the Queen of England, could be split into two businesses - one based in Britain and one in Zurich from where it runs operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Dubai that manage nearly $36 billion in client assets. RBS has attracted a variety of offers from a range of bidders including unnamed Asian and North American parties for Coutts International, two sources with knowledge of the operation said. The sale could net RBS between $720 million and $1.1 billion, based on a multiple of 2 to 3 percent of assets under management, said a third person with knowledge of the matter. |
