Syria bombs jihadist positions in Raqa for second day Posted: 18 Aug 2014 12:27 PM PDT Syrian warplanes bombed positions belonging to the jihadist Islamic State group in the northern province of Raqa for a second day on Monday, a monitoring group said. The bombing continued on Monday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, with at least 16 raids targeting jihadist positions. Three raids targeted the area around the town of Tabqa in western Raqa and four hit near the Tabqa military airport, the only remaining regime-held position in the province. In Aleppo province on Monday, warplanes targeted several IS-held positions, with eight civilians reported killed at Menbej. |
Yazidi fleeing Iraq jihadists has quintuplets: UN Posted: 18 Aug 2014 12:08 PM PDT A Yazidi refugee fleeing the jihadist offensive in Iraq has given birth to quintuplets in northeast Syria, an official with the UN refugee agency said on Monday. "Tamam Ramadan had quintuplets on Thursday -- two boys and three girls -- after a caesarian section in hospital in Qamishli," the UNHCR official said, asking not to be identified by name. Tamam, 27, from Syria and married to an Iraqi, is a member of the Yazidi community whom jihadists of the Islamic State group regard as heretics. Twice the young mother had to flee as IS militants swept in a lightning offensive across northern Iraq. |
Iran won't sign nuclear deal 'at any price' Posted: 18 Aug 2014 11:44 AM PDT Iran is committed to securing a nuclear agreement with world powers but will not sign one "at any price", its negotiators said Monday, as a key deadline for Tehran nears. Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany -- known as P5+1 -- signed an interim deal last November and are in discussions to secure a more permanent accord. "We are entering with goodwill into further negotiations with the P5+1 group and we want to reach an agreement... but we are not willing to pay any price," ISNA news agency quoted Majid Takht-Ravanchi, one of Iran's main negotiators, as saying. By August 25 Tehran must also respond to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on decade-old allegations of past nuclear weapons research. |
Treasury to take time to weigh options on tax inversions: official Posted: 18 Aug 2014 11:28 AM PDT The Obama administration will need more than a few weeks to weigh potential administrative actions to discourage U.S. companies from reducing their tax bills by moving to other countries, a Treasury Department official said on Monday. Staff at the U.S. Treasury has been assembling a list of options for Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. |

Republican-turned-independent former U.S. Senator Jeffords dies Posted: 18 Aug 2014 10:27 AM PDT By Thomas Ferraro WASHINGTON (Reuters) - James Jeffords, a soft-spoken Vermonter whose defection from the Republican Party in 2001 created an unprecedented power shift in the U.S. Senate and gave Democrats control of the chamber for 18 months, died on Monday at age 80, his former aide said. Jeffords had been in declining health and died at a military retirement home in Washington, the aide, Diane Derby, said. A funeral is being planned in his hometown of Rutland, Vermont, she added. Jeffords was a New England moderate who found himself out of step with his increasingly conservative colleagues when he rocked American politics on May 24, 2001, by announcing he was leaving President George W. Bush's Republican Party, tipping the divided Senate. |
Yet another company is practically begging for an Apple lawsuit Posted: 18 Aug 2014 10:08 AM PDT Xiaomi is making the job of former Googler Hugo Barra more and more difficult when it comes to denying copycat claims that say Xiaomi products look too much like their Apple-made alter egos. After launching the Mi iPad a few months ago, which is basically a nearly identical iPad mini clone, Xiaomi is now releasing MIUI 6, its latest Android-based operating system that looks very much like iOS 7, TechCrunch reveals. Even though it retains some of the features MIUI already had to offer users in previous versions, MIUI 6 looks very much like an Androidified version of iOS 7 when it comes to certain elements. Sure, it's not anything as faithful as the iOS 7-based UI skin made for |

Enjoy this video of Shenmue in HD, because you'll probably never play it Posted: 18 Aug 2014 08:41 AM PDT Mod creator NoconKid is creating an HD version of the original Shenmue. The project, which began as an HD recreation of the in-game arcade, has expanded to the entire map. Then there's what happens when a large publisher like Sega takes notice of something like this, and whether they want to bother with licensing and monitoring someone using their IP. |
You may have to wait a while to get a truly scratch-proof iPhone 6 Posted: 18 Aug 2014 08:21 AM PDT I scream, you scream, we all scream for an iPhone 6 with a scratch-proof sapphire display. However, a new research note from J.P. Morgan flagged by AppleInsider indicates that we may have to wait a bit to get our hands on the sapphire display-equipped iPhone 6. According to J.P. Morgan's research, Apple will release a sapphire-free version of the iPhone 6 this fall but has plans to release a premium version of the device featuring a sapphire display in 2015. "Although we have channel indications that some sapphire devices will be produced, we actually lean toward Apple selling no sapphire phones this year," writes J.P. Morgan analyst Rod Hall. "On sapphire as a feature — we see it as a |
Incredibly cool iPhone 6 feature seemingly confirmed by new leak Posted: 18 Aug 2014 08:02 AM PDT Last week we started seeing evidence that Apple's iPhone 6 Lightning cables would feature reversible USB, marking the first time that an Apple smartphone would come with this particular feature. Now uSwitch, in conjunction with iPhone leaker Sonny Dickson, has published some pictures of the iPhone 6 USB cable's retail box that it says clearly shows the new cable will feature reversible USB. "The shots of retail boxes for the cables confirm that rather than being something that could yet be a long way from reality and market-readyness, Apple is in fact ready to introduce them with the iPhone 6 next month," uSwitch writes. Reversible USB cables solve the annoying problems that arise when you damage your hardware by trying |

The birth rate for unmarried women is at its lowest in nearly a decade Posted: 18 Aug 2014 05:44 AM PDT Births outside of marriage have been on a steady decline since 2008. Resurgent Federer books ATP World Tour Finals berth Posted: 18 Aug 2014 05:14 AM PDT A resurgent Roger Federer has qualified for a record 13th consecutive ATP World Tour Finals in comfortable fashion, in marked contrast to 2013 when he squeezed in the week before the end-of-season tournament in London. Federer, 33, claimed his sixth Western and Southern Open title in Cincinnati on Sunday with victory over Spain's David Ferrer, the last key tune-up event for the U.S. Open. The result was good enough for him to become the third man to qualify for the eight-player event, behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, the world numbers one and two. "It's always one of the big goals I set myself at the beginning of the season," Federer, a six-time Finals winner, said in a statement. |
