Liverpool complete signing of Moreno Posted: 16 Aug 2014 12:34 PM PDT Liverpool have completed the signing of 22-year-old Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno from Europa League champions Sevilla, the Premier League club announced on Saturday. Liverpool did not disclose either the length of Moreno's contract or how much they paid to sign him, but British press reports put the transfer fee at around £12 million ($20.2 million, 15.1 million euros). "In my view, Liverpool are the best club in England and I couldn't waste an opportunity to come and play for them," Moreno told the club website. The Spain international completed the formalities of his move at Liverpool's Melwood training base, but he has not signed in time to feature in their Premier League opener at home to Southampton on Sunday. |

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 12:01 PM PDT Fulham's dismal start to life outside the Premier League shows no signs of improving as Millwall earned a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Felix Magath's team are playing in the second tier for the first time in 13 years and so far they have found the Championship a distinctly unfriendly environment. Magath complained about Ipswich's tough tackling when Fulham crashed to a 2-1 defeat on the opening weekend of the season, to which Town boss Mick McCarthy replied "welcome to the Championship". Millwall had only avoided relegation to League One on the final day of last season, but they have made a bright start to the new campaign, beating Leeds 2-0 last weekend, and they maintained their 100 percent record when winger Martyn Woolford side-footed home in the 12th minute. |
IS killed more than 700 Syria tribe members in 2 weeks: NGO Posted: 16 Aug 2014 11:45 AM PDT Islamic State jihadists have killed more than 700 members of a tribe in eastern Syria in two weeks, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday. They were killed in the Ghranij, Abu Hamam and Kashkiyeh villages of the mainly IS-controlled province of Deir Ezzor, said the Observatory, which relies on a vast network of activists and medics on the ground for its information. Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said that the fate of 1,800 other members of the tribe was unknown. Fighting between the jihadists and the Sunni Muslim tribe erupted in the oil-rich province after a deal between the two sides collapsed, with the tribe refusing to bow to IS control. |

Wood's late leveller rescues Leicester Posted: 16 Aug 2014 10:56 AM PDT Leicester City rescued a 2-2 draw against Everton as New Zealand striker Chris Wood snatched a late equaliser in his club's first Premier League match for a decade. Nigel Pearson's team are back in the English top-flight for the first time since 2004 and their return looked set to end in disappointment at the King Power Stadium. Aiden McGeady put Everton ahead in the first half and, although Leicester's £8 million club record signing Leonardo Ulloa equalised soon after, Steven Naismith gave Roberto Martinez's side the lead again just before the break. |
Hassan denied second gold by Sweden's Bahta Posted: 16 Aug 2014 10:40 AM PDT The promise of Dutch delight turned to despair – and ultimately silver and bronze consolation - in the dramatic closing stages of the women's 5,000m final on the penultimate day of the European Athletics Championships in Zurich. Less than 24 hours after winning the 1500m final (on a night when Dafne Schippers completed a 100m sprint double), Sifan Hassan was closing on what would have been a famous double of her own and a record-equalling fourth for the Netherlands as she surged from seventh at the bell to the shoulder of Sweden's Meraf Bahta coming into the home straight. Hassan had to be content with silver, finishing 0.40sec, with her Dutch team-mate Susan Kuijken coming through for bronze and Jo Pavey, the 40-year-old 10,000m winner from Great Britain, down in seventh. "I was never afraid to lose the duel with Hassan. |

Top US general raises hopes of easing arms ban to Vietnam Posted: 16 Aug 2014 10:09 AM PDT The United States could help build Vietnam's naval capacity if a ban on selling lethal weapons to the authoritarian nation is lifted, the most senior US military officer to visit Vietnam for decades said Saturday. General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that "in the near term" there would be a discussion in the United States about whether to lift the ban introduced over human rights concerns. Trade has flourished between former wartime foes America and Vietnam since the countries normalised ties in 1995. Hanoi is currently locked in a bitter maritime dispute with Beijing over disputed waters and island chains in the South China Sea. |

Kurds battle to retake Iraq's largest dam: general Posted: 16 Aug 2014 09:05 AM PDT Kurdish troops backed by US warplanes launched a bid Saturday to recapture Mosul dam, Iraq's largest, from jihadists, a senior Kurdish military official said. "Kurdish peshmerga, with US air support, have seized control of the eastern side of the dam" complex, Major General Abdelrahman Korini told AFP. We are still advancing and in the coming hours should announce welcome news," he said, using the old Arabic acronym for the Islamic State jihadist group. The dam on the Tigris river, on the southern shores of Mosul lake about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the city, provides electricity to much of the region and is crucial to irrigation in vast farming areas in Nineveh province. |

Syria clashes as jihadists advance on rebel bastions Posted: 16 Aug 2014 08:33 AM PDT Syrian rebels on Saturday defended Marea, one of their main northern strongholds, against a rapid advance by Islamic State jihadists, a monitoring group and an activist said. The opposition Syrian National Council in exile called for the international community to attack IS positions not only in northern Iraq but also in Syria. IS fighters were nearing the towns of Marea and Aazaz, both bastions of rebel groups battling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, after seizing a number of villages in Aleppo province bordering Turkey in just three days. If the jihadists manage to take the strategic towns, this could deal a severe blow to rebel groups battling both regime forces and IS. |

Chips are down for Atlantic City's hard-luck Revel Casino Posted: 16 Aug 2014 05:46 AM PDT When the $2.4 billion Revel Casino opened its doors in 2012, the curvy blue-glass tower was hailed as the wave of the future for Atlantic City, New Jersey. "You don't expect to see a two-year-old property close," said Alan Woinski, president of Gaming USA, an industry consultancy and newsletter publisher. Its sleek, dramatic design was supposed to be its prime attraction, but critics say the structure was too grandiose, and its cavernous gaming floor often feels dead. By most accounts, the Las Vegas buzz that the Revel's backers hoped to recreate is conspicuously missing. |
