Apple typically updates its product cycle in the second half of the year, getting a lift from holiday sales. |
Fall TV 2014: Your Everything Guide to the New Season, Including Premiere Dates! Posted: 28 Aug 2014 12:12 PM PDT The new fall TV season is upon us, and as usual, it's jam-packed with so many new shows that you can't possibly keep them all straight. That's where this story comes in! Bookmark it now; below, you'll find a filterable guide to all the new and returning TV series that are airing this fall. Premiere dates, airtimes, show descriptions, editors' picks—they're all in there. We'll continue to update it in the coming weeks. Please give the module a few seconds to load, it's a heavy one! Editor's Note #1: If you click the "follow" button next to any given show, it will: 1. add that show to your "following" list (which you can access via the dropdown menu in the upper righthand corner of the site, next to your user name), 2. add that show to a personalized listings module on the TV.com homepage, and 3. add you as a member of the corresponding show community (if it exists), which means you'll see posts about the show in your community feed. Editor's Note #2: Currently, our module only displays shows that have definite premiere dates—that's why you won't find shows like The Comeback, The Librarians, or The Newsroom on the list. We DO expect them to debut/return this fall, but until they're officially on the schedule, they won't appear in the widget. Editor's Note #3: If you think you've found an error or notice that we've missed a particular premiere date, please (politely!) let us know in the comments. What will YOU be watching this fall? |

Kiev to reinstate army conscription in coming months Posted: 28 Aug 2014 10:59 AM PDT Ukraine announced on Thursday that it will return to mandatory conscription in the coming months as its troops battle pro-Russian insurgents in the east. "The National Security and Defence Council has decided to restart conscription in the fall (autumn)," Mykhailo Koval, deputy head of the council, said after an emergency meeting chaired by President Petro Poroshenko. Ukraine's government decided last year to switch to a contract-based professional army, ending Soviet-style bi-annual drafts in the spring and fall for men between 18 and 25. |

Afghan election result delayed again despite US pressure Posted: 28 Aug 2014 09:10 AM PDT Afghanistan will not have a new president in time for a key NATO summit next week, officials said Thursday, as the country's prolonged election crisis lurched towards another damaging delay. A NATO summit in Britain from September 4-5 is meant to agree on future support for Afghanistan after the 13-year US-led combat mission ends later this year. The United Nations released a statement saying that its mission chief Jan Kubis had told outgoing President Hamid Karzai "that a rigorous and credible audit required time, but could be completed around 10 September". NATO press officials in Kabul were not immediately available to comment on whether both Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, the two presidential candidates, could attend the event. |

Iraq and Syria pose Saudi dilemma - failed states or Iran proxies Posted: 28 Aug 2014 07:29 AM PDT By Angus McDowall and William Maclean RIYADH/DUBAI (Reuters) - With militant Islamists gaining the upper hand in Syria's rebel movement and grabbing big tracts of Western Iraq, Saudi Arabia's ruling family faces an increasingly uncomfortable dilemma. The Al Saud have long seen the conflicts in Iraq and Syria as a pivotal battle for the future of the Middle East, pitting Sunni Muslims against a radical, revolutionary, Shi'ite Iran. |

Islamic State executes more than 160 Syria troops: monitor Posted: 28 Aug 2014 06:35 AM PDT Islamic State jihadists have executed more then 160 fleeing Syrian soldiers, a monitoring group said Thursday, the latest in a string of brutal abuses alarming Western powers who fear a global spread of the terror. News of the killings comes as US President Barack Obama is reportedly weighing air strikes on IS positions in Syria and coming closer to greenlighting a mission to aid Shiite Turkmen trapped in an Iraqi town by the jihadists. Syrian regime air strikes killed six IS leaders on Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, but Washington has so far baulked at cooperating with Damascus against the jihadists. French President Francois Hollande added his voice to the disquiet that has been growing since the jihadists marauded through Iraq and beheaded US journalist James Foley. |
