UEFA will not recognise results of Crimean clubs in Russia

Posted: 22 Aug 2014 10:02 AM PDT

The pitch of the FC Sevastopol home stadium in Sebastapol on March 26, 2014European football's governing body UEFA on Friday said that it would not recognise the results of any matches played by clubs from Crimea in competitions organised by the Russian Football Union (RFU). UEFA said that the decision to punish Crimean clubs playing in the Russian league had been made by its emergency panel "in light of the complex and difficult factual and political considerations, and until an agreed solution can be found". The strategic peninsula of Crimea, long home to Russian military bases, was annexed from Ukraine by Russia in March. Moscow's move came despite international criticism of an independence vote by separatists in the mainly Russian-speaking province, following February's ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.

WHO warns of 'shadow zones', hidden cases in Ebola outbreak

Posted: 22 Aug 2014 08:51 AM PDT

A health inspection and quarantine researcher (L) demonstrates to customs policemen the symptoms of Ebola, at a laboratory at an airport in QingdaoThe scale of the world's worst Ebola outbreak has been concealed by families hiding infected loved ones in their homes and the existence of "shadow zones" that medics cannot enter, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. The U.N. agency issued a statement detailing why the outbreak in West Africa had been underestimated, following criticism that it had moved too slowly to contain the killer virus, now spreading out of control. Under-reporting of cases is a problem especially in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The stigma surrounding Ebola poses a serious obstacle to efforts to calibrate the outbreak in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria, which has claimed far more victims than any other episode of the disease that was first discovered nearly 40 years ago in the forests of central Africa.

The authorities have been cracking down on illegal migrants since the expiration in November of a seven-month amnesty during which they had to regularise their status or leave the kingdom. The Arab News reported that "more than 400 undocumented expatriates, including women and children living in the Manfuha district (of Riyadh)... were rounded up during operations" early on Thursday. Nearly one million foreign migrants took advantage of last year's amnesty to leave voluntarily, while another four million were able to find employers to sponsor them, a legal requirement in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
