McLeish back in football with Genk Posted: 22 Aug 2014 12:54 PM PDT Former Scotland, Rangers and Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has returned to football, being appointed as coach of Belgian side Genk on Friday. Genk said that McLeish, 55, had signed a two-year deal at the Cristal Arena, making his managerial comeback after a short-lived spell with English Championship side Nottingham Forest ended in February. Genk, Belgian champions in 2011 and Cup winners in 2013 and the club where the likes of Thibaut Courtois and Kevin de Bruyne initially broke through, parted company with previous coach Emilio Ferrera after a 3-1 defeat to Mechelen on the opening day of the Pro League season. |
You’ll be very lucky to get your hands on a 5.5-inch sapphire iPhone this year Posted: 22 Aug 2014 12:36 PM PDT A new report from Asia claims that Apple will indeed use sapphire glass covers for some of its iPhone 6 models, but that the sapphire iPhone 6 will be a rarity this year. Digitimes says that GT Advanced Technologies, Apple's sapphire-making partner, will not reach full capacity in 2014 and adds that sapphire screen covers will be extremely expensive this year. FROM EARLIER: Huge leak shows the 5.5-inch iPhone's rear shell side-by-side with the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 The publication expects GTAT to only mass-produce enough sapphire crystal for 1.35 million to 2.25 million 5.5-inch iPhone 6 units this year, suggesting that only Apple's upcoming phablet, or at least a version of it, may receive such durable display panels. You now have 10,000 more chances to get the smartphone of Android fans’ dreams Posted: 22 Aug 2014 12:19 PM PDT The OnePlus One might not have the best smartphone name you've ever seen, but just about everything else about it is tremendously appealing — especially if you're a hardcore Android fan. The handset runs a heavily customized version of Android known as CyanogenMod, and it's just begging to be hacked to your heart's content. It also features a sleek design, surprisingly solid specs and an off-contract price that starts at just $299. The problem, of course, is that it's incredibly difficult to purchase a OnePlus One because the phone is in such high demand. Now, however, OnePlus is giving Android fans 10,000 more chances to buy a One. "Bummed that summer is almost over? Reminiscing about all the good times in the |

UEFA will not recognise results of Crimean clubs in Russia Posted: 22 Aug 2014 10:02 AM PDT European football's governing body UEFA on Friday said that it would not recognise the results of any matches played by clubs from Crimea in competitions organised by the Russian Football Union (RFU). UEFA said that the decision to punish Crimean clubs playing in the Russian league had been made by its emergency panel "in light of the complex and difficult factual and political considerations, and until an agreed solution can be found". The strategic peninsula of Crimea, long home to Russian military bases, was annexed from Ukraine by Russia in March. Moscow's move came despite international criticism of an independence vote by separatists in the mainly Russian-speaking province, following February's ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. |

WHO warns of 'shadow zones', hidden cases in Ebola outbreak Posted: 22 Aug 2014 08:51 AM PDT The scale of the world's worst Ebola outbreak has been concealed by families hiding infected loved ones in their homes and the existence of "shadow zones" that medics cannot enter, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. The U.N. agency issued a statement detailing why the outbreak in West Africa had been underestimated, following criticism that it had moved too slowly to contain the killer virus, now spreading out of control. Under-reporting of cases is a problem especially in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The stigma surrounding Ebola poses a serious obstacle to efforts to calibrate the outbreak in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria, which has claimed far more victims than any other episode of the disease that was first discovered nearly 40 years ago in the forests of central Africa. |
Unidentified fever 'kills 13' in DR Congo in 10 days Posted: 22 Aug 2014 08:35 AM PDT A fever of unidentified origin has killed 13 people in the northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo since August 11, the health minister said. "All 13 people who have died suffered from a fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and, in a terminal stage, of vomiting a black matter," Dr Felix Kabange Numbi said late Thursday. "Many died presenting haemorragic symptoms, but there is also serious malaria that can cause this type of symptom, or typhoid fever," a WHO official based in Kinshasa told AFP, asking not to be named. |

Saudi police arrest 400 illegal migrants: reports Posted: 22 Aug 2014 07:23 AM PDT Police in Saudi Arabia have arrested at least 400 mostly African illegal migrants south of the capital Riyadh, local media reported on Friday. The authorities have been cracking down on illegal migrants since the expiration in November of a seven-month amnesty during which they had to regularise their status or leave the kingdom. The Arab News reported that "more than 400 undocumented expatriates, including women and children living in the Manfuha district (of Riyadh)... were rounded up during operations" early on Thursday. Nearly one million foreign migrants took advantage of last year's amnesty to leave voluntarily, while another four million were able to find employers to sponsor them, a legal requirement in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. |
Islamist militants on rise in Austria: government Posted: 22 Aug 2014 06:48 AM PDT Authorities suspect around 130 people resident in Austria - most of them foreign nationals - have allied themselves with Islamist militants fighting abroad, officials in Vienna said on Friday, raising their estimate by nearly a third. Public safety director Konrad Kogler told a news conference the 130 figure included "people actively participating in combat as well as ones who have returned to Austria, because both groups of people are relevant for us". He thought around two-thirds of them had come back to Austria and one-third were in battle or on the way there. Austria has a population of around 8.5 million people. |

Dead Irishman tests negative for Ebola Posted: 22 Aug 2014 06:09 AM PDT A man who died in Ireland shortly after returning from Sierra Leone has tested negative for the Ebola virus, health officials said Friday. The Health Service Executive had said Thursday the man's death was "a suspected case" of the tropical virus and quarantined his body until tests could be carried out. The man, Dessie Quinn, who was in his mid-40s, had returned from working as an engineer in Sierra Leone, one of the countries worst affected by the west African Ebola outbreak, his company KN Network Services said. Local media reported that Quinn was receiving treatment for malaria since his return to Ireland. |
