Insight: How aggressive lending came back to bite South African bank Abil Posted: 20 Aug 2014 10:31 AM PDT By David Dolan and Tiisetso Motsoeneng JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Unemployed South African construction worker Daniel isn't sure how he fell so deeply in debt. All he knows is that African Bank Investments , which was bailed out this month, kept offering him money and he kept taking. For years African Bank, known as Abil, made high-interest loans to millions of lower-income, black South Africans like Daniel, even when bank statements produced to obtain the loan showed they would have struggled to service their debts, according to court documents in cases brought by the bank against defaulting borrowers. Daniel's 226,000 rand of debt ($21,300) became the South African taxpayer's problem on Aug. 10, when the central bank said it would buy Abil's 17 billion rand bad loan portfolio after the lender revealed it would make a full-year loss and needed to raise more capital for the second time in a year. |
Tennis - Serena Williams named US Open top seed Posted: 20 Aug 2014 10:11 AM PDT - Two-time defending champion Serena Williams was named the top seed for the US Open, the year's final Grand Slam tennis showdown that opens Monday on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts. World number one Williams was also the US Open top seed in 2002 and 2013 and each time went on to win the title. Romania's Simona Halep, runner-up at this year's French Open, was made the second seed followed by Czech Petra Kvitova, who last month captured her second Wimbledon crown, and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska in fourth. Russia's Maria Sharapova, the reigning French Open champion and 2006 US Open winner, was made the fifth seed while Belarus' Victoria Azarenka, who lost to Williams in the past two US Open finals, goes in as the 16th seed. |

Fla. Panhandle military beach is little-known gem Posted: 20 Aug 2014 08:59 AM PDT EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) — Alabama tourist Lance Du Bose has long enjoyed taking his family to a little-known spit of beach underneath a highway bridge on the Florida Panhandle, where there's sand, shade and shallow water and fewer visitors than the beaches in nearby Destin. The only drawback: occasional encounters with military police armed with AR 15 assault rifles. |

More weapons heading for Iraq's kurds, from unlikely source Posted: 20 Aug 2014 06:02 AM PDT BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany is prepared to send arms to Kurdish security forces in northern Iraq fighting Islamic State militants, Germany's foreign and defence ministers said on Wednesday. Military equipment such as helmets and security vests would be sent immediately, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said, adding that Berlin had agreed also to send weapons. Refracking brings 'vintage' oil and gas wells to life Posted: 20 Aug 2014 05:03 AM PDT Hydraulic fracturing, which has upended global energy markets by lifting U.S. Canada's Encana Corp invested $2 million to refrack two wells in Louisiana's Haynesville shale formation earlier this year, after seeing its production in the area dip 27 percent from 2012 levels. "There were a significant number of wells that we considered unstimulated," said David Martinez, Encana's senior manager for Haynesville development. Using minuscule plastic balls, known as diverting agents, pumped at high speeds with water into the old wells, most of which are three to five years old, Encana blocked some the older fractures, or cracks. "The thought is that the diverting agent will go to the cracks with the least amount of pressure," bypassing cracks with higher pressure and boosting the pressure of the entire well so output climbs, Martinez said. He said the process can't be as precisely controlled as an initial round of hydraulic fracturing, in which water, chemicals and sand into are blasted into rock to unlock oil and gas. |
