Lawyer: Audio shows gap in firing when Michael Brown was shot Posted: 26 Aug 2014 11:37 AM PDT A previously undisclosed sound recording captured the shooting of Michael Brown by a white police officer, CNN reported Tuesday, as it broadcast what it said appeared to be audio from the gunfire that killed the unarmed black teen. The man was said to have been recording a Skype conversation at the same time as the deadly encounter nearby between Brown and the police officer, CNN said. The man who made the recording wishes to remain anonymous, said his lawyer Lopa Blumenthal, who said it could have "huge relevance" in the case -- particularly the pause in the shooting. A grand jury is hearing evidence to determine whether police officer Darren Wilson, 28, used excessive force in fatally shooing Brown, who autopsies found had been shot six times. |
Lawyer: Audio reveals pause in firing when Michael Brown was shot Posted: 26 Aug 2014 10:41 AM PDT What's thought to be an audio recording of the shooting death of Michael Brown has reportedly surfaced. According to CNN, an unidentified man, who has since been interviewed by the FBI, is said to have managed to record the incident in which Michael Brown was shot by Officer Darren Wilson earlier this month, setting off a national firestorm. The most notable tidbit from the short recording (and what will become subject to the most immediately scrutiny and parsing) is the existence of two distinct volleys of gunfire from Officer Darren Wilson's weapon. UN cargo helicopter crashes in South Sudan warzone Posted: 26 Aug 2014 09:52 AM PDT A UN cargo helicopter crashed Tuesday in South Sudan's warzone region of Unity state, the UN peacekeeping mission said, adding it was "deeply concerned about the fate of the crew". The UN mission said it had "dispatched a search and rescue team" to the area, near the northern oil town of Bentiu, one of the hardest fought over areas in the country's more than eight-month-long civil war. The Mi-8 helicopter, which generally carries between three and five crew members, crashed about 10 kilometres (six miles) south of Bentiu. "The mission lost contact with the helicopter, which was on a routine cargo flight from Wau to Bentiu," around 1130 GMT, the United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said in a statement. |

The recalled item, the LS-15 AC power cord, was distributed with Hewlett-Packard and Compaq notebook and mini notebook computers and with AC adapter-powered accessories such as docking stations, the commission said in a statement. "Customers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled power cords and contact Hewlett-Packard to order a free replacement," the statement said. |
Is Comcast’s service now bad enough to kill you? Posted: 26 Aug 2014 08:42 AM PDT We've known for a while now that Comcast's customer service is incredibly bad, but we never imagined that it could be potentially lethal… until now. Two new stories have just cropped up that show how Comcast's subpar service might not just be headache-inducing but potentially life-threatening as well. The first one, written by well-known analyst Rob Enderle over at TechNewsWorld, explains how Comcast disconnected his Internet and phone service without telling him while making a network upgrade in his neighborhood and then took "a few days" to get it back online even though he called the company via his cell phone the minute he saw that his service was down. Apparently Comcast will shut off your service during upgrades if it detects |

Boko Haram seizes villages, towns in NE Nigeria Posted: 26 Aug 2014 07:54 AM PDT Boko Haram on Tuesday attempted to blow up a bridge on the Nigerian border with Cameroon after overrunning a town and sending residents and soldiers fleeing, police and locals said. A Cameroon police officer stationed in the far north town of Fotokol told AFP that the militants tried to destroy the bridge, which serves as the border crossing with Gamboru Ngala in Nigeria. Boko Haram stormed Gamboru Ngala early on Monday and by evening had taken over the police station, a military barracks and vocational training centre, where they had based themselves, locals said. Three children were reportedly injured by flying shrapnel when explosives were detonated, possibly by firing from the Cameroon side of the border, they added. |

'Perfect storm' for Ebola to spread, says virus pioneer Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:55 AM PDT Peter Piot, the Belgian scientist who co-discovered the Ebola virus in 1976, on Tuesday said a "perfect storm" in West Africa had given the disease a chance to spread unchecked. "We have never seen an (Ebola) epidemic on this scale," Piot was quoted by the French daily Liberation as saying. "In the last six months, we have been witnessing what can be described as a 'perfect storm' -- everything is there for it to snowball." |
Lib Dems pledge sex education for seven-year-olds Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:41 AM PDT Children in all state schools would be given "age-appropriate" sex and relationships education from the age of seven under plans announced Tuesday by the Liberal Democrats. Financial literacy and citizenship would also be taught as part of what Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's party termed a "Curriculum for Life". The plans form part of the Lib Dem manifesto for the 2015 general election and would make personal, social and health education (PSHE) compulsory in all state-funded schools, including academies and free schools. Under existing policy, sex education is obligatory in local authority-run state secondary schools, but not in academies or free schools. |

Obama plans executive steps to boost veterans' mental health care Posted: 26 Aug 2014 03:52 AM PDT President Barack Obama, weeks after signing legislation to fix delays in veterans' healthcare, will unveil a series of executive actions on Tuesday aimed at improving access to mental health treatment for former service members. Obama will outline the steps in a speech to the American Legion veterans' organization in Charlotte, North Carolina, the White House said. His appearance comes after he signed a $16.3 billion bill earlier this month to provide veterans with more timely medical care and fix problems in the scandal-plagued Veterans Affairs Department. The VA was thrust into the spotlight earlier this year after allegations surfaced that it had covered up the months-long wait times some veterans had to endure before receiving medical care. |
