Great Britain top swimming medals table in Berlin Posted: 24 Aug 2014 01:04 PM PDT The European Championships came to an end with three gold medals on the final day confirming Great Britain's place at the head of the medal table in Berlin. Fran Halsall opened the session with 50m freestyle gold, Jazmin Carlin added the 400m freestyle title to her 800m gold before Ben Proud anchored the British men's medley relay quartet to victory. It meant Great Britain topped the table with 24 medals, including nine golds, ahead of Denmark – six golds among their total of nine – with Hungary in third with 14 of which five were gold. |
Israel leader tries to link Hamas, Iraq extremists Posted: 24 Aug 2014 12:48 PM PDT JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's prime minister is trying to capitalize on the gruesome video of an American journalist's beheading by the Islamic State extremist group, saying Hamas is an equally vicious foe as he tries to rally international support in Israel's war in the Gaza Strip. But the comparisons between Hamas and Islamic State are being met with reservations by Israel's allies and enemies alike. |

Farah breaks European two mile record Posted: 24 Aug 2014 11:45 AM PDT Distance-running star Mo Farah marked his first appearance on a home track in more than 12 months by smashing Steve Ovett's 36-year-old British record for the rarely run two miles at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham on Sunday. The Olympic, world and European champion at both 5,000 and 10,000 metres, Farah won in a time of eight minutes 07.85 seconds as he comfortably surpassed the 8:13.51 secs mark of Ovett, the 1980 Olympic 800m champion. "Early on I felt a bit tired and then as I got into it I just felt better and better," Farah said. Farah won both the 5,000 and 10,000m at the European Championships in Zurich earlier this month, having started the season with an unconvincing marathon debut in London and then suffering a shock health scare which ruled him out of the Commonwealth Games. |

Notting Hill Carnival brings reggae beats to London streets Posted: 24 Aug 2014 11:11 AM PDT Europe's biggest street party the Notting Hill Carnival in London drew vast crowds on Sunday as revellers gathered for reggae, steel bands and dancing. The annual celebration sees a five-kilometre (three-mile) route through west London sealed off to traffic and taken over by booming sound systems and dancers in exotic headdress. The Notting Hill Carnival honours London's Afro-Caribbean culture in an area which was home to thousands of immigrants to Britain from the Caribbean in the 1950s onwards. The area's modern bohemian charm was captured in director Richard Curtis's 1999 romantic comedy "Notting Hill". |

Reggae making a revival in Jamaica, recalling golden era of '70s Posted: 24 Aug 2014 09:33 AM PDT When reggae artist Tarrus Riley entered the stage, the screams of the full house were deafening, and the fervor persisted throughout his performance. A musical and social roots movement called "Reggae Revival" is on the rise in Jamaica, where the raunchier dancehall genre has been king for the last two decades. The revival evokes music from reggae's golden era of the 1970s, dominated by the late, laid-back legend, Bob Marley, who put reggae on the global map with his catchy tunes and spiritual and socially conscious lyrics. "Reggae is bouncing back," said Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records who introduced the group Bob Marley and the Wailers to the world. |

Donaldson secures Ryder Cup berth with Czech Masters win Posted: 24 Aug 2014 09:01 AM PDT Jamie Donaldson will be making his Ryder Cup debut next month after winning the Czech Masters in Prague on Sunday. The 38-year-old Welshman required a top seven finish to make it on to Paul McGinley's European team to face the United States at Gleneagles. Lying two shots off leader and compatriot Bradley Dredge in a share of second overnight, he fired a final round four-under-par 68 for a 14-under total 274 to claim his third EPGA title. Dredge came second for the second successive week, his fourth round 72 leaving him two shots away, with Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen and South African Merrick Bremner in a share of third, a further shot adrift. |
Chadli ruins Redknapp's Tottenham return Posted: 24 Aug 2014 08:45 AM PDT Nacer Chadli ruined Harry Redknapp's return to White Hart Lane as the Tottenham winger's double inspired a 4-0 rout of woeful QPR on Sunday. QPR boss Redknapp was back at his old club for the first time since his sacking in 2012, but his hopes of avenging that surprise dismissal by chairman Daniel Levy swiftly evaporated as Tottenham ran riot. Inspired by a sublime display from Argentine playmaker Erik Lamela, Spurs surged into a three-goal lead before half-time thanks to a brace from Belgian winger Chadli either side of defender Eric Dier's second goal for his new club. |
Swimming - Pan Pacs open water races postponed Posted: 24 Aug 2014 08:30 AM PDT - The 10-kilometre open water events at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships scheduled for Monday have been postponed due to poor water quality at two Gold Coast venues, officials said Sunday. The event will now be swum in conjunction with the Junior Pan Pacs in Maui, Hawaii, on August 31. Organisers investigated a move from Marine Stadium, Southport, to Lake Hugh Muntz after strong winds and heavy rain caused concerns with the water quality. "We are sincerely apologetic but we were unfortunately left with no alternative but to make the call to cancel," Swimming Australia CEO Mark Anderson said in a statement. |

Rosberg booed after crash punctures Hamilton hopes, Ricciardo beams Posted: 24 Aug 2014 07:40 AM PDT World championship leader Nico Rosberg was condemned by his team and booed by spectators on Sunday after colliding with Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton on the way to taking second place behind victorious Australian Daniel Ricciardo in Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix. Team bosses Niki Lauda and Toto Wolff both laid the blame for the second-lap crash that left leader Hamilton with a race-wrecking puncture on Rosberg who appeared to drive into his teammate's car. Mercedes team chief Niki Lauda added: "I have apologised to Lewis... A bad result for Lewis and a bad result for the Mercedes team. |

More than 250 migrants may have died in shipwreck off Libya Posted: 24 Aug 2014 06:17 AM PDT More than 250 migrants may have died when a boat sank a kilometer (half a mile) off the Libyan coast, a coastguard official said on Sunday. "We believe there are still more than 250 bodies trapped underwater," coastguard official Mohammad Abdellatif told Reuters. Thousands of migrants, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, have crowded into rickety vessels in recent months in an effort to reach Italian shores. |

Turkey's Erdogan seen softening style not substance as president Posted: 24 Aug 2014 05:28 AM PDT By Selin Bucak ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Tayyip Erdogan's caustic rhetoric has won him the devotion of Turkey's conservative Islamic heartlands, from his dismissal of political enemies as "worse than leeches" to his comparisons of Israel's actions in Gaza to those of Hitler. His fiery podium speeches and blunt populism have galvanized core supporters and cemented his rise as modern Turkey's most powerful leader, culminating in his victory this month in the country's first popular election for president. His language, often playing on a schism in Turkish society between a Western-facing, largely secular class suspicious of his Islamic ideals and a pious segment of society who see him as a hero, has left opponents fearing his presidency will only polarize Turkey ever further. He has made no secret of his ambition to establish an executive presidential system, a move his critics say would put too much power in the hands of a leader who is steering the country ever further away from the secular ideals of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern republic. |
