Pilots' union, UPS barred from probe of 2013 U.S. crash Posted: 25 Aug 2014 12:44 PM PDT National Transportation Safety Board told United Parcel Service Inc and its pilots union on Monday they can no longer take part in the investigation of a 2013 crash that killed two UPS pilots. The accident agency said in a statement the Independent Pilots Association and UPS Airlines had violated a participation agreement by publicly commenting on the investigation into the Birmingham, Alabama, crash before the board's public meeting on its cause. The decision bars UPS and the union from the investigation into the crash of an A300-600 cargo plane as it tried to land in August 2013. Pilot Cerea Beal Jr. and first officer Shanda Fanning were killed. |

New PM Cerar hints Slovenia might scale back privatization drive Posted: 25 Aug 2014 10:02 AM PDT By Marja Novak LJUBLJANA (Reuters) - Slovenia's new prime minister hinted on Monday he might scale back the country's privatization program once he forms a coalition with two parties opposed to large-scale sell-offs of state assets. Law professor and political novice Miro Cerar also told parliament he would work to strengthen the banking system, whose fragility brought the euro zone country to the verge of an international bailout last year. Cerar now has 15 days to nominate his cabinet, which also has to be confirmed by parliament. He told deputies before the vote his government would pursue "strategically considered privatization", without elaborating. |

Europe sees five possible sites for first-ever comet landing Posted: 25 Aug 2014 08:53 AM PDT The European Space Agency (ESA) on Monday said it had drawn up a shortlist of five possible sites for carrying out the first-ever landing on a comet. Astronomers have been scrutinising high-definition photos sent back by the Rosetta spacecraft, which rendezvoused with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on August 6 after a 10-year chase through the Solar System. In mid-November, ESA intends to send down a robot laboratory, Philae, which will harpoon itself to the comet's surface and carry out a battery of scientific tests. "Choosing the right landing site is a complex process," it cautioned. |

Experts probe launch failure for EU's satnav project Posted: 25 Aug 2014 08:00 AM PDT Experts are racing to identify and fix a problem that saw two satellites from Europe's troubled Galileo satnav programme sent into the wrong orbit. The pair were launched from Europe's space pad in Kourou, French Guiana, last Friday and were intended to be the first two fully operational satellites in the new-generation navigation system. Investigators from the European Space Agency (ESA) and launch operator Arianespace will work with an "internal task force" set up by the European Commission to figure out what went wrong, the EU's executive said on Monday. European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship Ferdinando Nelli Feroci said he stood by the project because of its "strategic importance," adding he was confident deployment of the satellite constellation "will continue as planned". |

Liberian medic treated with experimental Ebola drug dies Posted: 25 Aug 2014 06:30 AM PDT Abraham Borbor had been improving but died on Sunday night, Liberian Information Minister Lewis Brown told AFP. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday there had been a "significant improvement" in the condition of a doctor and nurse being treated with ZMapp in Liberia, and that another doctor was getting better, but still in a serious condition. The Americans were infected in Liberia along with a Spanish priest who died on August 12, despite also receiving ZMapp. There is currently no available cure or vaccine for Ebola, but several drugs are under development. |
