Officials added that they were providing consular assistance to the person, who has not been identified. Professor John Watson, deputy chief medical officer stressed that the risk posed by Ebola to people living in Britain "continues to be very low". "We have robust, well-developed and well-tested NHS (National Health Service) systems for managing unusual infectious diseases when they arise, supported by a wide range of experts." |

Saints denied by West Brom at St Mary's Posted: 23 Aug 2014 11:59 AM PDT Southampton and West Bromwich Albion are still looking for their first wins in the fledgling Premier League season after an underwhelming goalless draw at St Mary's on Saturday. After last week's opening loss to Liverpool, new Saints manager Ronald Koeman picked up his first point, but the hosts were unable to find their way past a stout West Brom defence. Saints striker Dusan Tadic had the best chance of a mistake-riddled first half on 40 minutes, but was unable to rise over his marker to head the ball into a vacant net. The second period was only minutes old when Koeman's opposite number Alan Irvine unleashed West Brom's record signing Brown Ideye, the Nigerian coming on for injured Victor Anichebe. |
Japan's labor market improving in face of challenges - BoJ's Kuroda Posted: 23 Aug 2014 11:44 AM PDT By Howard Schneider JACKSON HOLE Wyo. (Reuters) - Japan's labor market is showing "significant improvement," though it still faces challenges including a large share of part-time workers in the service sector, Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Saturday. Wage growth is critical to reverse deflation and for that to happen "it is necessary to have some kind of coordinated mechanism," Kuroda said at a central banking conference here, adding that the Bank of Japan's quantitative easing stimulus is helping Japan escape from a deflationary cycle of falling wages and demand. "The Bank of Japan's price stability target can serve as a benchmark for wage setting," he added, speaking on a panel alongside central bankers from Brazil and Britain. "Once the bank has succeeded in firmly anchoring (inflation) expectations at 2 percent this could provide the basis on which wage negotiations are conducted." The Bank of Japan deployed an intense burst of monetary stimulus last April, when it pledged to double its money base with the quantitative easing program of asset purchases. |
Grabben on target as Norwich earn derby spoils Posted: 23 Aug 2014 11:27 AM PDT Norwich stepped up their bid for a quick return to the Premier League as Lewis Grabben's strike secured a 1-0 win at local rivals Ipswich on Saturday. Grabban was signed from Bournemouth for £3 million in pre-season in a bid to revitalise a Norwich forward line that struggled badly as they slumped into the Championship last season. The former Millwall striker has made an immediate impact and his fourth goal for his new club arrived in the 24th minute to settle the East Anglian derby at Portman Road and secure Norwich's third successive victory. Canaries boss Neil Adams, the surprise choice to replace Chris Hughton last season, believes his side's strong start proves both he and his players are up to the task of winning promotion. |
Alonso surprised by Ferrari pace Posted: 23 Aug 2014 11:11 AM PDT Fernando Alonso said he was surprised by his Ferrari team's speed and competitiveness after he qualified fourth on the grid for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix. The two-time world champion had forecast that Ferrari would struggle but after a wet session he said he had been pleasantly surprised by the outcome. "We expected a strong Williams here, but I think the wet masked their true pace a little bit so tomorrow maybe I expect them to be very competitive in the dry. |
Swimming - Pellegrini claims third European 200m freestyle title Posted: 23 Aug 2014 10:54 AM PDT - Federica Pellegrini proved once again she is Europe's queen of the 200m freestyle after claiming her third straight title at the European Championships in Berlin. The Italian has topped the podium at Olympic, world and European level since her debut on the rostrum at the 2004 Games in Athens when she won a silver medal in the 200m freestyle shortly after her 16th birthday. On Saturday, she denied Hungary's Katinka Hosszu a fourth individual gold medal with Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands third. Other winners at the Europa-Sportpark were Polish pair Konrad Czerniak and Radoslaw Kawecki in the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke respectively, Great Britain's Adam Peaty in the 50m breaststroke with the German men winning a thrilling 4x200m freestyle relay to conclude the action. |
Mercedes welcome Ecclestone trial settlement Posted: 23 Aug 2014 10:38 AM PDT By Alan Baldwin SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS Belgium (Reuters) - Formula One needs a strong leader and Bernie Ecclestone's $100 million court settlement to end a bribery trial in Germany is positive for the sport's future, Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff said on Saturday. "I think what is important is stability in Formula One," the Austrian told reporters after his drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, title rivals, qualified first and second at the Belgian Grand Prix. We had one of these today." Team bosses and the sport's 83-year-old commercial supremo Ecclestone held a meeting in the Mercedes paddock hospitality unit before qualifying, their first since the Briton agreed the settlement with the Munich court earlier this month. |

Vettel blames lack of power for Mercedes gap Posted: 23 Aug 2014 09:04 AM PDT Sebastian Vettel blamed a lack of power from his Renault engine for the massive gap between his third placed Red Bull and the two Mercedes on the front row of the grid for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion was 2.126 seconds adrift of pole-man Nico Rosberg and 1.898 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton. "The reason we're behind is fairly simple," said Vettel. Mercedes can run a bit more wing level, they have more down-force and can still take that wing on the straight – it's the reason. |
Egypt sentences five to death for policeman's murder Posted: 23 Aug 2014 08:48 AM PDT An Egyptian court sentenced five men to death on Saturday for the murder in January of a policeman on duty at a church just outside Cairo. Militant groups have been targeting security forces since a bloody police crackdown on supporters of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following his overthrow in a military coup in July 2013. Saturday's death sentences, set by a criminal court in Giza province, will be either confirmed or overturned in a final verdict due on September 20. |

Jihadists killed in new push to take Syria air base Posted: 23 Aug 2014 07:27 AM PDT At least 24 jihadists have been killed and 150 wounded in clashes with Syrian troops defending an air base in Raqa province, a monitoring group said on Saturday. The clashes came as the Islamic State group launched a new bid to capture the Tabqa base, the government's last bastion in the northern province, the rest of which is in the hands of the jihadists. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack began overnight when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance to the base, prompting clashes that killed 14 IS fighters. Those deaths brought IS losses since it began its assault on Tabqa to at least 94, with more than 400 wounded, according to the Observatory. |

Formula One - Rosberg takes Belgian GP pole ahead of Hamilton Posted: 23 Aug 2014 06:54 AM PDT - World championship leader Nico Rosberg secured his fourth pole position in succession as he topped the times ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in a tense and wet qualifying session for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix. Hamilton struggled with his brakes and handling in the slippery conditions, but will start alongside Rosberg on the front row as he seeks to trim his 11 points lead in the drivers' championship with eight races remaining. Behind the two Mercedes, defending four-time champion Sebastian Vettel of Germany was third fastest for Red Bull ahead of Spain's former two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. |
Ten dead in new air raid on Libyan militia near Tripoli Posted: 23 Aug 2014 06:18 AM PDT An unidentified warplane bombarded Islamist militia positions near Tripoli airport overnight, leaving at least 10 people dead, a spokesman for an alliance of Libyan militias said on Saturday. The aircraft targeted an army base to the south of Tripoli and a nearby warehouse, Mohammed al-Ghariani, spokesman for Fajr Libya (Libyan Dawn), said on An-Nabaa television station. Islamist fighters including a group from Misrata, east of Tripoli, have seized the army base from a rival militia from Zintan, west of the capital. During a lull in the fighting, the Islamist militia organised a visit on Thursday for Libyan journalists to prove they had captured the building, which was the army's headquarters during the regime of long-time dictator Moamer Kadhafi, overthrown in 2011. |
Britain plans tougher laws to tackle UK jihadists Posted: 23 Aug 2014 06:01 AM PDT By Belinda Goldsmith LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said on Saturday it planned tougher laws to deal with British Islamist militants after Islamic State (IS) fighters in the Middle East released a video showing a suspected Briton beheading U.S. British Muslims and politicians have expressed horror at the apparent involvement of a Briton in the murder, which has fed concerns about the number of Islamist militants from Britain joining conflicts overseas and then returning home radicalized. Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May said she was preparing new laws to tackle Islamist militants at home and to stop them going abroad to fight, adding that Britain faced a long struggle against a "deadly extremist ideology". |

Ann Summers says sorry over Isis underwear Posted: 23 Aug 2014 05:10 AM PDT Adult retailer Ann Summers apologised Saturday after launching a range of lingerie named Isis -- but said it did not support jihadists in Iraq and Syria and had no plans to withdraw the line. Ann Summers' Isis range includes lacy black and white bras, thongs and suspenders and is for sale online and in its shops, which number over 100 across Britain. A spokeswoman for Ann Summers said that names for its ranges are chosen months before their launch. The United States has been waging air strikes against IS militants amid fears the territory they have seized in Syria and Iraq could become a launchpad for global terror attacks. |
