(Reuters) - A car sought in connection with a suspected threat against President Barack Obama has been located in Connecticut, authorities said on Saturday. Secret Service, which is responsible for presidential security, had asked state police for help in locating the car in connection with a possible threat to the president, State Police Lieutenant J. The Secret Service, in a statement on Saturday, said that it had investigated information about a suspicious person and vehicle and was working to determine its validity. |
Guinea-Bissau in nationwide anti-Ebola clean-up Posted: 30 Aug 2014 12:49 PM PDT Guinea-Bissau launched a nationwide hygiene drive on Saturday, declaring itself "on alert" after the announcement that the Ebola epidemic ravaging west Africa had spread to neighbouring Senegal. The campaign will involve the cleaning and disinfection of public places "across the entire country" on the last Saturday of every month, Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira's office said. In Guinea-Bissau's capital, Bissau, President Jose Mario Vaz spearheaded the clean-up outside the Bandim market, dressed in casual sportswear and holding a dust pan. |
Gallacher still hopes for Ryder Cup slot Posted: 30 Aug 2014 12:33 PM PDT Scotland's Stephen Gallacher kept alive his hopes of automatic selection for the European Ryder Cup team by firing a 69 in the third round of the Italian Open in Turin on Saturday. Austria's Bernd Wiesberger is third on 13 under after following consecutive rounds of 66 with a 71, with English duo Lee Slattery and Ross Fisher sharing fourth on 11 under. The 39-year-old Gallacher arrived in Italy knowing that he needed to place first or second in the final qualifying tournament for the Ryder Cup, being held at Gleneagles near his home in late September, to dislodge Graeme McDowell from the ninth and final automatic spot in Paul McGinley's 12-strong team. |

Leverkusen battle back against Hertha to go top Posted: 30 Aug 2014 11:30 AM PDT Bayer Leverkusen moved top of the Bundesliga on Saturday after twice coming from behind to beat Hertha Berlin 4-2. Following their impressive win in Dortmund last week, Leverkusen made it two wins from two thanks to late goals from Julian Brandt and Karim Bellarabi. "This was a very tough game for us and because of that it was very valuable," Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt said. |
Stuttering Monaco held with Falcao absent Posted: 30 Aug 2014 11:15 AM PDT With Radamel Falcao left out of their side, Monaco continued their stuttering start to the Ligue 1 season on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Lille at the Stade Louis II. Falcao's replacement in the starting line-up was Dimitar Berbatov and the Bulgarian earned his side a point with a 61st-minute equaliser to cancel out Nolan Roux's first-half opener for the visitors. Leonardo Jardim's side were unable to find a winner and have managed just one victory, and four points, from the first month of the new campaign. Lille, in contrast, will be satisfied with a result that maintains their unbeaten start to the season and gets them back on track after their midweek Champions League play-off exit at the hands of FC Porto in Portugal. |

New racism row flares in Brazilian football Posted: 30 Aug 2014 09:37 AM PDT Brazilian top flight outfit Gremio say they are committed to weeding out racist behavior by fans after identifying a group who heaped abuse on Santos goalkeeper Aranha in a midweek Cup game. Gremio could face expulsion from the Brazilian Cup after the fans stood just behind his goal in the southern city of Porto Alegre chanted insults and made monkey noises. Brazilian television reported Saturday that the woman, Patricia Moreira, had been suspended from her work after she was identified via social media. Articles relating to discrimination in Brazil's sports justice code could see Gremio, now coached by former Brazil handler Luiz Felipe Scolari, thrown out of the tournament, docked league points and fined. |
Ukraine says Russian tanks flatten town; EU to threaten more sanctions Posted: 30 Aug 2014 09:21 AM PDT By Richard Balmforth and Adrian Croft KIEV/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Ukraine said Russian tanks had flattened a small border town and pro-Russian rebels had made fresh gains in its east, as EU leaders signalled on Saturday they would threaten more sanctions against Moscow over the crisis. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, attending an EU summit in Brussels, said he was hoping for progress in finding a political solution, but told journalists there were now thousands of foreign troops in his country. Russia has repeatedly dismissed accusations from Kiev and Western powers that it has sent soldiers into its neighbour, or supported pro-Russian rebels fighting a five-month-old separatist war in Ukraine's east. |

"The crisis in the Gulf has been resolved," Muscat's Foreign Minister Yussef bin Alawi bin Abdullah said after a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting in the Saudi Red Sea resort of Jeddah. Relations between Qatar and its Gulf neighbours Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain sank to a new low in March when the three governments withdrew their ambassadors from Doha, accusing it of meddling in their affairs and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. |

"We have prefered to use this week to allow him to recuperate completely and get back to optimal condition," Ancelotti said on Saturday. Ronaldo had already been left out of Portugal coach Paulo Bento's squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifier against Albania on Friday. Spanish press reported on Saturday, though, that Madrid are hopeful that a three week rest will be enough for Ronaldo to return to action when the European champions face Atletico once more in La Liga on September 13. |
WFP says it needs $70 million to feed 1.3 million people in Ebola quarantine Posted: 30 Aug 2014 06:22 AM PDT The World Food Programme needs to raise $70 million to feed 1.3 million people at risk from shortages in Ebola-quarantined areas in West Africa, with the agency's resources already stretched by several major humanitarian crises, its regional director said. WFP's West Africa Director Denise Brown said the organization was currently providing food for around 150,000 people in Ebola-striken nations but needed to rapidly scale that up as the worst ever epidemic of the virus advanced. Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have pledged to impose a 'cordon sanitaire' on the most affected communities in their joint border region, restricting travel to and from the areas and limiting their access to food supplies. "We've agreed this morning...that we need to extend that because WHO is already talking about 6-9 months before this is contained." Brown said the WFP would look from donations from major donors like the United States, the European Union, the World Bank and Japan, as well as from non-traditional benefactors such as Arab states. |
