U.S. considering options for humanitarian aid in Iraq Posted: 13 Aug 2014 11:11 AM PDT By Jeff Mason EDGARTOWN Mass. (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama is considering options to help provide humanitarian assistance to stranded Iraqis but has ruled out using American troops for combat, the White House said on Wednesday. White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes, speaking to reporters in a briefing, declined to rule out the possibility of using U.S. forces on the ground in a humanitarian role. The United States added about 130 additional military personnel to northern Iraq this week to develop options to help Iraqi civilians trapped on Mount Sinjar by Islamic State fighters. Since June the United States has sent about 700 military personnel to Iraq to protect U.S. diplomats there and take stock of Iraq's military capacity. |

Iran's Supreme Leader says interaction with U.S. limited to nuclear talks Posted: 13 Aug 2014 07:48 AM PDT Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday nuclear talks with world powers would continue, but added there was no point in holding negotiations with the United States on other issues. Khamenei, who has the last word on all matters in Shi'ite Muslim Iran, appeared to give a nuanced message on the country's often fraught relationship with Washington. The nuclear talks, which involve the United States, have resulted in an interim deal under which Tehran has curbed some atomic activity in exchange for limited sanctions relief. "There are no benefits in having relations or negotiations with the United States, except in certain specific cases," Khamenei told a gathering of Iranian diplomats, according to a statement on his website. |
Image of Asia: Returning turtles to the sea Posted: 13 Aug 2014 07:17 AM PDT In this photo by Firdia Lisnawati, locals and tourists on the Indonesian island of Bali help release endangered giant green turtles into the sea. Police Col. Djoko Hari Utomo says the turtles being released were among 17 turtles confiscated from a poacher last month. The poacher allegedly bought them from fishermen and they were to be sold to a food stall. Turtle meat is a traditional delicacy in Bali, although Indonesia has banned their trade and consumption due to concerns about dwindling numbers and the possibility of a tourist boycott. Turtles, especially green turtles, are among several protected species in the vast nation of 17,000 islands. |

Bieber's representatives and Florida attorney would not confirm the plea deal to Reuters ahead of a scheduled court hearing in Miami on Wednesday afternoon but his attorney hinted a deal was in the works. Egypt's Mubarak denies ordering killing of protesters Posted: 13 Aug 2014 05:35 AM PDT By Lin Noueihed CAIRO (Reuters) - Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak denied in court on Wednesday ordering the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his 30-year rule. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for complicity in the deaths of demonstrators and the breakdown of law and order during the 18-day revolt, but an appeals court subsequently ordered a retrial. Mubarak, who is on trial with his sons and other senior officials, also denied the corruption charges and said he had faithfully served his country for 62 years, first as a military officer and later as president. "Hosni Mubarak, who is before you today, did not order at all the killing of protesters or the shedding of the blood of Egyptians," he told the court room, reading from a prepared statement. |

Taiwan's Hon Hai notches third straight quarterly profit rise Posted: 13 Aug 2014 04:27 AM PDT By Michael Gold TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd reported a third consecutive quarterly profit gain Wednesday as the world's largest contract maker of electronic goods continued to benefit from demand for products from No.1 client Apple Inc. Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, earns as much as 50 percent of revenue assembling Apple devices such as iPhones and iPads, analysts say. In the meantime, the widely expected release in the coming months of larger-screen iPhones will keep Apple as Hon Hai's biggest cash cow for the foreseeable future, according to company-watchers. Still-hot sales of iPhones drove Hon Hai's net profit in April-June to T$20.19 billion ($673 million), versus the T$17.66 billion mean estimate of 13 analysts polled by Reuters. Shares of Hon Hai closed up 1.4 percent before the earnings release on Thursday, versus a 0.7 percent rise in the benchmark TAIEX index. |

Thai military government moves to outlaw commercial surrogacy Posted: 13 Aug 2014 03:52 AM PDT By Amy Sawitta Lefevre BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's military government gave preliminary approval on Wednesday for a draft law to make commercial surrogacy a criminal offense, following a spate of dramatic surrogacy scandals in the past two weeks. The case of an Australian couple accused of abandoning their Down syndrome son with his Thai surrogate mother unleashed an international outcry over the "wombs for hire" business that rights groups say preys on poor and vulnerable women in countries such as India and Thailand. "The NCPO has approved a surrogacy draft law," Pattamaporn Rattanadilok na Phuket, a spokeswoman for the military government, officially known as the National Council for Peace and Order, told reporters on Wednesday. "We will punish through criminal law those who practice and are involved in commercial surrogacy," the spokeswoman added. |
