Takata agrees to quit using volatile chemical in air bags

The Japanese supplier is at the center of a global recall of tens of millions of cars for potentially deadly air bag inflators that could deploy with too much force and spray metal fragments inside vehicles. Use of ammonium nitrate as a propellant in Takata air bags has been linked to dozens of ruptured inflators since 2003.

Skelos, a 67-year-old Republican, and his 32-year-old son, Adam, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Thursday, nearly a month after prosecutors unveiled charges against the Long Island residents. Lawyers for the two men entered the not guilty pleas at a hearing before U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood.

The court ruled 8-1 in favor of Anthony Elonis, who served prison time for posting a series of statements on the social media site in 2010 after his wife left him. After a court granted his wife a protective order against him, Elonis posted: "Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?" The case touched upon the rise of social media and how people use it to express strongly held feelings.


Chicago schools chief resigns amid federal probe

"I am saddened by the circumstances that have led to Barbara's resignation and I wish her well," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. "As a city, our focus must remain on finishing the school year strong and tackling the billion-dollar budget deficit that threatens the progress our students, teachers, principals and parents have made over the last several years," Emanuel said.

On a 8-1 vote, the court handed a win to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a federal agency that sued the company on behalf of Samantha Elauf. The legal question before the court was whether Elauf was required to ask for a religious accommodation in order for the company to be sued under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which, among other things, bans employment discrimination based on religious beliefs and practices.

Qatar has agreed to extend monitoring and travel restrictions on five Taliban detainees who were freed from the Guantanamo Bay U.S. detention camp last year in exchange for a U.S. soldier, a senior U.S. State Department official said on Sunday. The official, who asked not to be identified, said the restrictions would continue while Washington was in discussions with Qatar about ensuring the five posed no threat to U.S. security. Qatar took in the men as part of a deal to free U.S. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who had been captured by militants in Afghanistan.
