Retrial granted in death of Washington intern Chandra Levy Posted: 04 Jun 2015 09:56 AM PDT A District of Columbia judge on Thursday granted a new trial to the man convicted of killing federal intern Chandra Levy in 2001, a case that contributed to a politician's downfall. Superior Court Judge Gerald Fisher ordered the retrial for Ingmar Guandique, 34, after prosecutors dropped their opposition to defense lawyers' request for a new trial in the case, which had riveted the U.S. capital. Defense lawyers had argued that a key witness had lied and court records showed the new trial was assigned to Judge Robert Morin. |
Exclusive: Takata identifies at least 400,000 faulty air bag replacement parts Posted: 04 Jun 2015 09:08 AM PDT By Paul Lienert DETROIT (Reuters) - At least 400,000 of the 4 million replacement inflators for defective Takata air bags will need to be replaced again in U.S. vehicles, sources at the Japanese safety equipment maker and the U.S. safety watchdog told Reuters. Another 500,000 of those parts appear to be safe, according to U.S. safety regulators, leaving the safety of more than 3 million replacement parts in question. An official at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told Reuters on Wednesday that it was up to Takata Corp and the carmakers to "demonstrate to us that the remedy parts are safe for the life of the vehicle." A priority now is to determine which of the replacement parts "are suspect and need to be replaced" again, the NHTSA official said. |
Pilot error cited in deadly U.S. Army chopper crash off Florida Posted: 04 Jun 2015 07:45 AM PDT (Reuters) - The pilots of a U.S. Army helicopter that crashed into a Florida bay in March, killing 11 service members, lost control of the aircraft after becoming disoriented in heavy sea fog, the military said on Thursday. An investigation found that the two pilots failed to switch from using visual flight procedures to instruments that could have helped them navigate the foggy conditions they encountered during the nighttime training exercise, according to a statement from the Louisiana National Guard. Four guard soldiers and seven Marines from a special operations unit from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina died when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter plunged into waters off the Florida Panhandle on March 10. |

Widow files wrongful death lawsuit in California against Suge Knight, rappers Posted: 04 Jun 2015 04:29 AM PDT (Reuters) - A widow has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Marion "Suge" Knight, accusing the rap mogul of carelessly striking and killing her husband with his pickup truck during a fight outside a Southern California fast-food restaurant, court documents showed. Universal Pictures, along with rappers Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, were also named in the lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Superior Court of California County of Los Angeles by Lillian Carter, whose husband Terry was killed in the Jan. 29 incident in Compton, California. Knight, 50, was charged on Feb. 2 in criminal court with murder and attempted murder, accused of running over Carter, 55, and another man with his pickup after an argument on the set of a commercial for the film "Straight Outta Compton." He has pleaded not guilty. |

North Carolina governor will sign bill for 72-hour wait for abortion Posted: 03 Jun 2015 08:59 PM PDT By Marti Maguire RALEIGH, N.C. (Reuters) - North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory said on Wednesday he will sign a law requiring pregnant women to wait three days between consulting a doctor and having an abortion, among the longest waiting periods in the nation. McCrory, a Republican, faced intense lobbying from pro-choice advocates who hoped he would veto the measure, citing his campaign promise not to sign any further restrictions on abortion. "Some very positive progress was made during the last several days to protect women's health," McCrory said. |
Oregon county vote against enforcing state gun law sparks outcry Posted: 03 Jun 2015 08:26 PM PDT Lane County's commissioners in a 4-1 vote on Tuesday decreed that local government could not afford to investigate violations of the new law, and affirmed the "right of the people to keep and bear arms" under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. Proponents of the stricter gun-sale rules, which go into effect in August, questioned whether the Lane County resolution would have any practical effect. "This is just a way for Republicans to curry favor with Oregon firearms advocates," Penny Okamoto, executive director of Ceasefire Oregon, a non-profit organization that aims to reduce gun violence, said on Wednesday. |
Ranchers defy U.S. in grazing parched Nevada lands, environmentalists say Posted: 03 Jun 2015 07:54 PM PDT (Reuters) - A Nevada ranch defied U.S. drought closure orders in grazing cattle on federally managed land, environmentalists said on Wednesday, comparing it to action by another Nevada rancher that led to an armed standoff last year with federal agents. The ranchers in the Battle Mountain area in northern Nevada let their livestock graze on Tuesday at the North Buffalo allotment managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the Western Watersheds Project said in a statement. |
After three decades on death row, Texas inmate Bower executed Posted: 03 Jun 2015 05:10 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Texas on Wednesday executed Lester Bower, one of the longest-serving inmates on the state's death row who had said he was wrongly convicted of killing four men in 1983 and had spent three decades trying to halt his capital punishment. Bower was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m. CDT after being given a lethal injection at the state's death chamber in Huntsville, a prisons official said. A former chemical salesman with two children, Bower became the oldest death row inmate put to death in Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976. |

Judge in Colorado cinema murder trial rejects defense request for mistrial Posted: 03 Jun 2015 04:04 PM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo., (Reuters) - The judge presiding over the murder trial of Colorado theater gunman James Holmes denied a motion by defense lawyers for a mistrial on Wednesday over videos shown to jurors of a psychiatrist's interviews with the admitted shooter. Public defender Kristen Nelson argued that a video played in court, in which Holmes described details of the crime to court-appointed psychiatrist William Reid, violated his constitutional right against self-incrimination. It was the second time Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour has denied a defense motion for a mistrial since Reid took the stand late last week. |
