U.S. meat, wine among Canada's targets in label fight: minister Posted: 02 Jun 2015 11:00 AM PDT By Rod Nickel WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - Canada is whittling down its list of U.S. products that it may hit with steep tariffs in retaliation against contentious meat-labeling laws, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said on Tuesday. The Canadian government is likely to target beef, pork, California wines, mattresses, cherries and office furniture, possibly along with other goods, from an earlier list of three dozen U.S. products, Ritz said in an interview. Canada is ratcheting up pressure on U.S. lawmakers to scrap the meat labeling laws after they were ruled illegal by the World Trade Organization (WTO) last month. |

Owners may need to have Takata air bags replaced more than once Posted: 02 Jun 2015 09:55 AM PDT Millions of owners of vehicles equipped with Takata air bags may have to get repairs done more than once because of shortages of replacement parts and uncertainty over whether repair parts already installed are defective, auto industry officials and safety regulators said on Tuesday. A House subcommittee has scheduled a hearing for 2 p.m. EDT on Tuesday as part of an investigation of problems with Takata air bags that have been linked to six deaths and one of the largest consumer product recalls in U.S. history. Lawmakers are expected to look at when owners of affected vehicles, which could number as many as 34 million in the U.S., can be sure that their air bags are safe. |

Majid Khan said interrogators poured ice water on his genitals, twice videotaped him naked and repeatedly touched his "private parts" – none of which was described in the Senate report. Interrogators, some of whom smelled of alcohol, also threatened to beat him with a hammer, baseball bats, sticks and leather belts, Khan said. |
U.S. investigators don't know if warning device worked in Amtrak crash: NTSB Posted: 02 Jun 2015 07:29 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Investigators probing the May 12 derailment of an Amtrak train in Philadelphia do not yet know whether an electronic warning device was operating or activated before the disaster, National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Christopher Hart told the U.S. Congress on Tuesday. In prepared testimony to a House of Representatives committee, Hart also said several U.S. rail carriers will not meet an end-of-year deadline for installing a more sophisticated safety system known as Positive Train Control. ... |

Friend of Boston bomber to be sentenced for obstructing investigation Posted: 02 Jun 2015 04:27 AM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - A friend of the Boston Marathon bomber who admitted to obstructing the investigation into the deadly 2013 blast, one of the highest-visibility attacks on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001, is set to be sentenced on Tuesday. Kazakhstan national Dias Kadyrbayev was one of three friends to face federal charges for removing a backpack containing fireworks from bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's college dorm hours after the FBI released photos of the suspect and his older brother. House Republican aides told reporters on Monday that investigators might suspect human error caused Amtrak Train 188 to hit speeds of 106 miles per hour (171 km per hour) in a zone with a 50-mph (80-kph) speed limit. Christopher Hart, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, is scheduled to testify to the House of Representatives' Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. |

Arizona mosque, site of anti-Islam protest, holds 'love not hate' event Posted: 01 Jun 2015 08:00 PM PDT By Deanna Dent PHOENIX (Reuters) - An Arizona mosque where hundreds gathered last week for an anti-Islam demonstration, with counterprotesters shouting "Go home, Nazis," was the site of a "love not hate" event on Monday to promote peace and inclusiveness, participants said. The Islamic Community Center of Phoenix said it was hosting a gathering that includes a multi-faith prayer service and speakers to "show that when one of us is mistreated, our community responds with a message of Love and Not Hate." "We ask that you bring a FLOWER as a symbol of love and care," the event organizers said on Facebook. "We are better together, and together we are strong." (https://www.facebook.com/events/1648234602075105) Monday's event, organized by more than 20 groups, comes four days after an anti-Muslim event held outside the mosque drew more than 200 protesters, some armed, who berated Islam and its Prophet Mohammed.] The rally was held at the mosque in part because two Texas gunmen who opened fire outside an anti-Muslim event in Texas last month had worshipped there, rally organizer Jon Ritzheimer, an Iraq war veteran, said. |

The legislation now goes back to the Republican-controlled state House of Representatives, which passed it in February by a margin wide enough to override the veto. |
