Florida doctor tied to Senator Menendez corruption case to have bail set

(Reuters) - A Florida doctor accused of giving lavish gifts to U.S. Senator Robert Menendez in a corruption case was due back in federal court Monday to have bail set on separate Medicare fraud charges. Salomon Melgen faces 76 counts of Medicare fraud and falsifying medical records, and has remained in jail since his indictment in April. District Judge Kenneth Marra ruled on Friday that Melgen could be granted bail as long as a series of strict conditions were met, including home detention, electronic monitoring and no access to boats or planes.

Usaamah Abdullah Rahim had been under 24-hour watch by the Joint Terrorism Task Force when FBI agents and a Boston police officer approached him on Tuesday in a parking lot to question him after wire-tapped phone calls revealed that he planned to try to behead police officers, in an attack apparently inspired by Islamic State militants. According to court papers filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Rahim, a 26-year-old security guard, threatened officers with a large knife and was shot and killed after ignoring orders to drop the weapon.

Authorities in Anaconda-Deer Lodge County were alerted on Sunday morning after the shooter called an acquaintance and said he planned to kill his family, and himself. "The home is located in a remote, rugged area, and we didn't immediately know where it was," said Anaconda-Deer Lodge Police Chief Tim Barkell.

Michael Slager, 33, was fired from his patrolman job after being charged with murder in the April 4 death of 50-year-old Walter Scott, who was running away from the officer following a traffic stop when he was fatally shot in the back. If convicted of murder, Slager would face between 30 years and life in prison without the possibility of parole, said Scarlett Wilson, solicitor for the Ninth Judicial Circuit.

A 15-year-old Michigan boy on Sunday completed a three-day, 57-mile walk across the state, carrying his younger brother on his back, as part of a campaign to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy. Hunter Gandee started the long trek with little brother Braden, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, on Friday morning in Lambertville, Michigan, an unincorporated community near the Ohio border. (Reuters) - Yale's heavyweight crew defeated Harvard on Sunday in the 150th running of the their regatta on the Thames River in Connecticut, giving the Bulldogs their first victory in the storied race since 2007. Yale took a 5-second lead at the first mile marker in the race on the Thames River, America's oldest collegiate sporting event, and never relinquished it, finishing nearly 17 seconds ahead of the Crimson.
