The two men were missing at early morning bed check in the Clinton Correctional Facility, a men's state prison in Dannemora, about 40 miles (65 km) south of the Canadian province of Quebec. Both men are considered a danger to the public, New York state police said. |
U.S. border patrol helicopter hit by gunfire near Mexican border Posted: 06 Jun 2015 09:27 AM PDT By Jim Forsyth SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing near the Mexican border after it was hit several times by gunfire, the FBI said on Saturday. The helicopter was on an operational mission along the Rio Grande near Laredo, Texas, when shots from the ground struck it late Friday afternoon, Special Agent Michelle Lee said. "The rounds penetrated and damaged the aircraft, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing," Lee told Reuters. |
Big U.S. data breaches offer treasure trove for hackers Posted: 06 Jun 2015 08:55 AM PDT By Andrea Shalal WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A massive breach of U.S. federal computer networks disclosed this week is the latest in a flood of attacks by suspected Chinese hackers aimed at grabbing personal data, industrial secrets and weapons plans from government and private computers. The Obama administration on Thursday disclosed the breach of computer systems at the Office of Personnel Management and said the records of up to 4 million current and former federal employees may have been compromised. U.S. officials have said on condition of anonymity they believe the hackers are based in China, but Washington has not publicly blamed Beijing at a time when tensions are high over Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea. |

U.S. judge for FIFA trials is familiar with organized crime cases Posted: 06 Jun 2015 05:21 AM PDT By David Ingram NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. judge presiding over the corruption cases of indicted soccer officials may not have been able to pronounce the name of soccer's world governing body, FIFA, during a secret hearing in 2013, but he does know how to oversee a proceeding that involves organized crime. U.S. District Judge Raymond Dearie in Brooklyn, New York, has spent some of his nearly three decades on the bench handling mobster trials. A defendant was found murdered in one of the cases, and in another the head of a crime family walked the streets in a bathrobe as he faked a mental illness to try to avoid standing trial. Now, Dearie, who turned 71 on Thursday, is responsible for presiding over the cases of nine current and former FIFA officials and five corporate sports executives who are accused of participating in a decades-long criminal enterprise that involved more than $150 million in bribes. |

Los Angeles police officers deemed justified in black man's slaying: L.A. Times Posted: 06 Jun 2015 12:27 AM PDT By Daina Beth Solomon LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles police chief and an independent watchdog have determined two patrolmen were justified in the shooting death of unarmed black man Ezell Ford last year, the L.A. Times newspaper reported on Friday, citing unidentified sources. Department investigators found evidence indicating Ford had struggled for control of one of the patrolmen's gun, supporting the account the officers gave after the incident, the newspaper cited two sources as saying. The department's inspector general, Alex Bustamante, also found the shooting justified, but faulted the officers for the manner in which they approached Ford in the moments before the shooting, the Times reported, citing the sources. |

ISIS is using chlorine as a weapon, Australia’s Foreign Minister says Posted: 05 Jun 2015 10:15 PM PDT By Morag MacKinnon PERTH (Reuters) - Islamic State militants have used chlorine as a weapon and are recruiting highly trained technicians in a serious bid to develop chemical weapons, Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop warned. In a speech to an international forum of nations that works to fight the spread of such weapons, Bishop said the rise of militant groups such as ISIS, also known as Daish, posed "one of the gravest security threats we face today." "Apart from some crude and small scale endeavors, the conventional wisdom has been that the terrorist intention to acquire and weaponize chemical agents has been largely aspirational," Bishop told a meeting of the Australia Group in Perth. "The use of chlorine by Daish, and its recruitment of highly technically trained professionals, including from the West, have revealed far more serious efforts in chemical weapons development," she said. |
TLC's Duggar daughters say forgive brother for molestation Posted: 05 Jun 2015 09:42 PM PDT Two of the daughters in TLC's reality show "19 Kids and Counting," told Fox News on Friday that they had forgiven their brother Josh Duggar for molesting them in the past, but said they felt 'revictimized' in recent weeks by the media outlets that have dredged up the juvenile offenses. Jill Dillard, 24, and Jessa Seewald, 22, told "The Kelly File" host Megyn Kelly that they weren't initially aware of inappropriate advances around 12 years ago from their then-teenaged brother. "It was very subtle, and so I think that for us, we realized this is serious, but at the same time, it wasn't like a horror story." Dillard and Seewald, both now married, said that their family had forgiven Josh Duggar, now 27, who was never arrested or charged for the offences that involved four sisters and a babysitter, including a girl aged under 10 at the time. |
Data hacked from U.S. government dates back to 1985: U.S. official Posted: 05 Jun 2015 08:54 PM PDT By Andrea Shalal and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Data stolen from U.S. government computers by suspected Chinese hackers included security clearance information and background checks dating back three decades, U.S. officials said on Friday, underlining the scope of one of the largest known cyber attacks on federal networks. A total of 2.1 million current U.S. government workers were affected, according to a source familiar with the FBI-led investigation into the incident. Accusations by U.S. government sources of a Chinese role in the cyber attack, including possible state sponsorship, could further strain ties between Washington and Beijing. |

Ex-Stanford execs Kuhrt, Lopez appeal convictions in Allen Stanford fraud Posted: 05 Jun 2015 07:21 PM PDT (Reuters) - Mark Kuhrt and Gilbert Lopez, who were convicted of helping the former Texas billionaire financier Allen Stanford swindle investors, have filed appeals challenging their convictions and sentences on multiple counts of wire fraud and conspiracy. The two said that the convictions were based on insufficiency evidence and excluded certain expert testimony, as well as other claims, in court documents released late Friday. Kuhrt and Lopez were convicted of knowing that Stanford was misusing the bank's assets, helping him conceal the misuse, and helping him deceive customers into believing he had infused hundreds of millions of dollars into Antigua-based Stanford International Bank during the 2008 financial crisis, according to evidence provided. |
Amtrak train collides with truck in Illinois, no injuries reported Posted: 05 Jun 2015 06:02 PM PDT (Reuters) - An Amtrak train traveling from Texas to Chicago with 203 passengers aboard collided with a truck near Wilmington, Illinois, on Friday but there were no immediate reports of injuries, the railroad said. The Texas Eagle, also known as Train No. 22, en route from San Antonio, hit a tractor trailer on the tracks about 50 miles south of Chicago, at about 4 p.m., said Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz. The train's 203 passengers were taken to Chicago by bus after waiting at a local high school while tracks were being checked for damages, Schulz said. |
Bergdahl lawyers seek dismissal of U.S. general in desertion case Posted: 05 Jun 2015 04:54 PM PDT By Jim Forsyth SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Lawyers for U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the former Taliban prisoner in Afghanistan charged with desertion, sought on Friday to have the general overseeing the military legal proceedings disqualified from the case, citing a conflict of interest. The motion filed by Bergdahl's attorney Eugene Fidell with a military appeals court argued that General Mark Milley's nomination to serve as the Army's chief of staff could impact the case, especially with Milley needing Senate confirmation to become the service's top officer. Many Republican lawmakers condemned the deal the Obama administration reached that brought Bergdahl home, calling it irresponsible. |
Defense chief working on plan to close Guantanamo prison Posted: 05 Jun 2015 03:32 PM PDT By David Alexander ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT (Reuters) - U.S Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday he was working with the White House to prepare a proposal for Congress on closing the Guantanamo prison for terrorism suspects, a long-time goal of President Barack Obama. The Senate is currently debating an annual defense policy bill that would permit closure of the prison, but only if the president first submits a plan that is approved by the Republican-led Congress. The U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay Naval base on Cuba was set up after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks for al Qaeda and Taliban detainees. |
